There is no denying that Conor McGregor has been one of the biggest stars in the history of UFC. He managed to become a global celebrity thanks to his success inside the Octagon. However, most of his success can be credited to a single person, his coach John Kavanagh.
To succeed in any field you need a mentor to guide you through to success. Conor McGregor found that mentor in John. In an old interview, Conor McGregor revealed how he found John. The Irishman explained most of the gyms he went to had an orthodox way of training which he did find appealing but with John, it was different and unique.
McGregor revealed, “When I went to John and met my coach john Kavanagh at straight blast gym…he had a more open mind and he encouraged different movements and I never experienced something like that and I never had heard any coach say that before… I thought to myself this guy is thinking outside the box and has a vision that everything works…When he spoke it made complete sense to me and that was that I stuck with him and he stuck with me and the rest is history.”
John Kavanagh is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and martial arts instructor. In fact, he is the first Irishman to ever hold a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He currently serves as the head coach at the Irish MMA facility Straight Blast Ireland in Inchicore.
When John Kavanagh “beat the s**t out of” Conor McGregor
Conor once received severe punishment from his coach John during the early stages of their training relationship because he broke a few restrictions. Aisling Daly, an Irish women’s strawweight who is now retired, was dropped by McGregor during a sparring session, infuriating the instructor.
Recall the incident while talking to Irish Independent John revealed that he got carried away after seeing Aisling get dropped and went to take on Conor himself. He said, “So I put the gloves on – actually, he has corrected me on that and says it was bare knuckles. But I held him down and beat the s**t out of him…I kept hitting him in the body until he couldn’t breathe and then I looked at him: ‘What’s it going to be? We can train or we can fight?’ And he was OK from the next day.”
John and Conor did form one of the greatest student-teacher duos in all of the combat sports. With John in his corner, McGregor managed to break through the ranks and eventually become the first ever UFC fighter to win two championships simultaneously.
