UFC welterweight Ian Garry made headlines during the ceremonial weigh-ins at UFC Sau Paulo. There, he had a friendly exchange with fellow UFC fighter Gilbert Burns. During this encounter, it seemed Burns inquired about the recent gym dispute between Garry and Leon Edwards, the reigning welterweight champion.

In response to Gilbert Burns‘ inquiry, Garry openly commented about Edwards. Doing so, he made sure the nearby cameras captured his words. This is what Garry said:

Because Leon’s a b***h and kicked me out of the gym.

According to Garry, it was Edwards and his head coach who took the initiative to request that he no longer train at Team Renegade. Garry also expressed his fondness for the gym’s atmosphere, emphasizing that it had nothing to do with the welcoming attitude of fellow teammates Tom and Ash.

However, he did raise questions about the reasons behind his ban. Ian Garry also acknowledged the competitive nature of the division, noting that Leon might see him as a threat. But, Ian emphasized that he was not a threat to Leon Edwards. Or at least for now, since he was not currently fighting for the UFC title.

Team Renegade reveals reason for barring Ian Garry from Leon Edwards’ gym

Recently, a training hurdle arose for Ian Garry, the fighter known for his versatile training choices, at Team Renegade gym. This gym is where the UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards, fine-tunes his skills. The management at Team Renegade recently informed The Independent that Garry’s access was denied due to a discrepancy in his alignment with the gym’s established culture.

Team Renegade explicitly stated that they occasionally extend the privilege of training to fighters from outside their ranks, but this practice is not the norm. They carefully evaluate whether a new addition aligns with their cultural values. In Ian Garry’s case, his nomadic approach to training, which has yielded great results, seemed incongruent with Team Renegade’s vision. They said:

Sometimes the coaches allow fighters to come in from the outside, but this is very much a privilege and not the norm... Ian Garry’s more nomadic approach...it’s not in line with what we are creating at Team Renegade....

Ian Garry expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he initially received from Team Renegade. However, it became evident that Leon Edwards and his coach held reservations about Garry’s presence. Edwards, in particular, was concerned about preventing any potential insecurities or doubts within the gym, which Garry found somewhat perplexing. The clash in training philosophies appears to be at the heart of the matter at Team Renegade.
