“What the HELL is he doing,” Cory Sandhagen strictly against handing 135 lbs title shot to Henry Cejudo on return

“What the HELL is he doing,” Cory Sandhagen strictly against handing 135 lbs title shot to Henry Cejudo on return

Cory Sandhagen- Henry Cejudo

Cory Sandhagen seems to be not fond of any obstacle on his way back to a title show, even if an athlete as great as Henry Cejudo blesses the bantamweight division back with his presence. Sandhagen is coming off a huge TKO win over Song Yadong at UFC Vegas 60 and has cautioned the 135 lbs division of his return to fighting. Most likely, Sandhagen wants to fight Marlon Vera next but would be okay to contest against Merab Dvalishvili as well, if it’s about being the #1 contender for title shot.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, Sandhagen talked about his win over Yadong, thus breaking his 2-fight skid to former world champions, his thoughts on fighting Marlon Vera next, his thoughts on if Vera deserves to get the next title shot, empathising with the fighters after the fight, his problem with fighting in the Apex, and much more. In the midst of all, Sandhagen also talks about former 2-division UFC champion and Olympic champion Henry Cejudo getting a title shot on his return.

“I don’t know what the hell is the guy doing,” says Sandhagen. “He’s gonna be a curveball forever if it’s his decision… he’s been off for so long. What would the UFC do that? Why would they invest in someone who’s just kind of like, probably peace out after he maybe wins the title again… I don’t see Henry as someone like they can really build off of because I don’t really think he’s gonna stick around for long…” continued Sandhagen.

Besides not favouring Cejudo to get the title shot at all, Sandhagen is, however, open in a fight against him. “Yeah that’s great too,” says Sandhagen. “I’m okay with that fight also… I haven’t thought about Henry too much, but fight someone as good as Henry would be really awesome too.”

Cejudo is jumping back into the competition out of the retirement that lasted merely 2 years. His last fight was against Dominick Cruz at UFC 249, in April 2020, when he became the first person to knockout Cruz and later on in the Octagon interview, announced his retirement, therefore relinquishing both of his belts at flyweight and bantamweight. Cejudo is now ultimately returning to add a third divisional belt to his legacy by challenging the UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

What do you make of Sandhagen’s opposition to Cejudo getting the UFC title shot on his return? Do you think he is right? What do you make of Sandhagen’s subtle interest in fighting Cejudo? Who do you think would win? Both Cejudo and Sandhagen know how to break an opponent’s flow of striking on the feet by putting their advanced setup against their initial offence. This one will be an interesting matchup since Sandhagen has shown in his last fight that he is been mixing his elites striking with some seasoned grappling as well.
