Former UFC flyweight champion and current ONE Championship titleholder Demetrious Johnson previously expressed his desire for a “dream match” against one of UFC’s biggest stars, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Johnson’s last appearance in the UFC was back in 2018 when he lost the flyweight crown to Henry Cejudo in a closely contested split-decision defeat. His transition to ONE Championship came through a trade involving Ben Askren.
A recent post on X ( previously known as Twitter ) shared the statistics that Demetrious Johnson has more accolades to his name than Khabib. The ONE champion seemed to like the comparison as he commented: ” look at all the gold booiisss and im missing 4 in that pic.”
Interestingly, Khabib Nurmagomedov once voiced his belief that Demetrious Johnson belonged in the pantheon of the greatest martial artists to have ever graced the cage. He drew parallels between Johnson and other fighters such as Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Daniel Cormier, and Henry Cejudo.
One noticeable difference between these two remarkable athletes is their physical size. Johnson stands at a compact 5’3″ and competes in ONE’s 135-pound flyweight division. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov, at 5’10”, made his name in the UFC’s 155-pound lightweight division. In reality, the chances of this dream matchup materializing are exceedingly slim. Nevertheless, contemplating the potential clash between these two icons remains enjoyable. Especially given Demetrious Johnson’s playful rivalry with Nurmagomedov.
