Demetrious Johnson is a revered figure in the MMA space. He recently ignited a heated debate by asserting that ascending to MMA champion status is notably more attainable than achieving the same feat in the realm of boxing. With his esteemed reputation in MMA circles, Johnson’s opinion carries significant weight, prompting fans to engage in spirited discussions.
Demetrious’ argument revolves around the inherent flexibility of MMA. Unlike boxing, where a fighter must excel in a single discipline, MMA allows individuals to compensate for weaknesses in one area with strengths in another.
To illustrate this point, Demetrious Johnson gave the example of UFC and WWE star Brock Lesnar, who became world champion. Demetrious Johnson said, ” Look at Brock Lesnar, he became a world champion in mixed martial arts and he had no stand-up experience whatsoever.” At UFC 91 in 2010, Brock Lesnar defeated Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin to unify the heavyweight championships.
Brock Lesnar became the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion in 2008. He has a professional record of 5 wins and 3 losses. Lesnar defended his title twice before getting knocked down by Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. Lesnar’s last fight in the promotion was in 2016 against Mark Hunt at UFC 200. However, the fight was overturned and the Beast Incarnate has not fought since.
Demetrious Johnson versus Bradley Martyn in a street fight
Former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson recently found himself fending off social media influencer Bradley Martyn. The fitness influencer went viral for belittling the idea of being defeated by a 125-pound MMA fighter like Johnson in a street fight. This incident quickly gained traction on the internet. It sparked discussions about the potential for a real showdown between Johnson and Martyn.
During a recent episode of The MMA Hour, Demetrious Johnson responded to the situation by chuckling. At first, he hadn’t even considered pursuing such a venture, but the viral nature of the incident piqued his curiosity. He addressed the possibility of engaging in a grappling match with Martyn.
Johnson expressed that he would not mind showcasing his skills against Bradley Martyn. While Johnson exuded confidence, he also remained cautious about predicting the outcome. He advised those close to him against wagering on the result, emphasizing the significant consequences their size difference could bring.
