Derrick Lewis medically cleared after illness caused him to pull out of UFC Vegas 65’s main event
Derrick Lewis had to pull out of his main event fight against Serghei Spivac due to an undisclosed illness
The “Black Beast” Derrick Lewis was set to take on Serghei Spivac at the main event of UFC Vegas 65. Derrick was believed by many to be in the best shape of his life for this fight. For a long time, he had been plagued by back and knee issues that hindered his progress.
This fight would have also marked his first fight since the controversial stoppage loss to Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 277. With 2 straight losses in his prior fights, Lewis was surely looking forward to making a huge statement with this fight. However, that would not be as during the prelims, reports began to surface about Derrick being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.
The broadcast team then made it official that Lewis had to pull out of the main event. They stated the reason as being a “non-Covid related, non-weight cut related illness”. However, now, according to Dr. Jeff Davidson, who works alongside the promotion, Lewis has been cleared of his stomach issues by medical professionals. He is expected to make a full recovery and has also been released from the hospital.
Derrick Lewis has not yet commented on the issue. However, this will come as a big blow to Lewis. He had been itching to come back and end the year with a bang. Although, fans will be glad to hear that the “Black Beast” is doing okay and will fight another day.

Derrick Lewis wants to have the most submissions in UFC history
Derrick Lewis is one of the funniest fighters in MMA. His antics such as taking off his pants in the octagon after a fight and wacky humor have made him a fan-favorite. However, within the cage, Lewis is no slouch as he holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history at 13. He has also defeated some elite heavyweights over the course of his career.
And in the leadup to UFC Vegas 65, Derrick Lewis, in typical fashion, revealed he was chasing another record. “I have just been promoted a few months ago to purple belt so… Now I believe I’m the baddest purple belt in Texas… My goals now, I’ll try to get the most submissions in UFC history,” said the Texan in an interview with ESPN.
The current holder of this record is a lightweight legend and former champion, Charles Oliveira. He has 16 submissions in the UFC compared to Lewis’ 1. Getting another 15 submissions this late in his career may be a tall order but fans have learned to not put anything past one of the UFC’s greatest knockout artists.
