Derrick Lewis is making his return to the octagon this Saturday against Sergey Spivak at UFC Vegas 65. Ahead of his fight, Lewis did an interview with ESPN MMA’s Heidi Androl where the fighter talked about the fight.

I expect from him to do a lot of wrestling, that’s about it,” said Derrick while talking about Sergey Spivak’s game plan. When asked about his preparations to tackle Spivak’s wrestling, Lewis mentioned his recent purple-black belt and confidence. The fighter also revealed that he plans to get the most number of submission finishes in comparison to any UFC fighter. 

He said: “Of course, I have just been promoted a few months ago to purple belt so… Now I believe I’m the baddest purple belt in Texas…my goals now, I probably try to get the most submissions in UFC history.” 

Well, the ‘Black Beast’ already has the bragging rights for having the most number of knockouts in UFC history. However, he’s not been able to use his power in the last few of his fights. But this time, Lewis has made some much-required changes to break the losing streak.

Once in the conversation for the Heavyweight title shot, Derrick Lewis has now lost thrice in his last four octagon appearances. This year,  Lewis lost to young Aussie blood, Tai Tuivasa and Sergei Pavlovich both by TKO. 

Going into this fight against Sergey Spivak, Lewis had to make changes and that’s exactly what he did. The fighter is currently working with a new head coach, Joe Murphy in order to get a new idea of his fighting style.

According to the fighter, he wanted to try something different and challenging that would definitely help him to become better than what he already is. The fighter has also made some necessary changes in his training program which now includes a lot of cardio-intensive exercises. 

Just wanted something different to challenge myself. I just got too comfortable, just wanted to challenge myself a little more.I have made big differences coming into each fight,” said Lewis about his training camp. Lewis is currently #7 in the heavyweight division rankings and will like to climb up as soon as possible. The 37-year-old is probably a few years away from retirement and getting UFC gold before that would be a great priority.
