Before knocking out Benoit Saint-Denis at the UFC 299, Poirier had previously lost to Justin Gaethje. However, his win at UFC 299 put him back into the conversation of the title fight. Islam Makhachev‘s manager declared on social media that the champion was ready to take him on. This got a quick response from Poirer who declared that he will go up against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev this June.
However, Makhachev reportedly does not think Poirier deserves the title fight. The Dagestani believes that there are other contenders like Gaethje and Charles Oliveira who are more deserving.
Meanwhile, Poirier and McGregor’s rivalry is well embedded in the history books. McGregor severely injured himself during his last fight in the UFC which was against Poirier. McGregor recently did an interview where he talked about a fourth fight with Poirier which he termed as the proper trilogy fight.
What does Charles Oliveira say about Dustin Poirier’s potential title shot against Islam Makhachev?
The lightweight division is filled with some of the most exciting contenders on the UFC roster. Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, and division champion Islam Makhachev are definitely on the top. Everybody knows about the rivalry and the anticipated rematch of Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira.
Everybody thought that Oliveira would fight Makhachev next for a chance to win back his title. However, now with talks of Poirier getting the title shot, Oliveira expressed his thoughts on the matter:
I don’t even think about that, to be honest, This is information that comes from the internet, and people talk a lot on the internet. I’m not worried about that. I know that I’m the next in line. So, that it’s.Charles Oliveira via MMA Mania
‘Do Bronx’ is the former lightweight champion who lost his title to Makhachev. This happened back in 2022 and he has since defeated Beneil Dariush. Now, the Brazilian has an upcoming fight against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300. A win will likely put him in title contention, but so will a win for Gaethje against Max Holloway on the same card. Dana White will have his hands full after the historic card.
