Recently the UFC confirmed that the two lightweights will be heading to the world’s most famous arena, the MSG to be among the coming event for UFC 281, featuring the much-anticipated title bout between Israel Adesanya and his kickboxing rival, Alex Pereira. The two have a longstanding grudge and their bout may help determine a new contender after UFC 280’s resolution to the lightweight division’s title picture.

Both Chandler and Poirier seem to hold a deep disdain for the other which is heavily uncharacteristic. For Chandler, someone who talks nice to even Conor McGregor, this animosity towards Poirier comes out of the blue. Poirier himself is a cool head that was best demonstrated during Conor’s multiple attacks at his family prior to and after their trilogy, who again finds himself in a weird spot hating on Michael Chandler.

Poirier was the first one to challenge Chandler after his iconic KO of Tony Ferguson at UFC 274. However Chandler was not eager to take that fight as he felt Dustin didn’t give him the respect he deserves when he entered the UFC and now that he’s at a high, he won’t let Dustin leech off it.

Poirier has a different mindset and realises that for someone like Chandler who likes to fight in bursts of explosive activity, a pressure fighter as durable as Dustin could be a nightmare match up for him. In this same line of thought, Poirier started accusing Chandler of ducking the fight.

While all of this was happening behind a screen, the first time they crossed paths no one expected tension to rise so high. While being escorted to his seats at UFC 276, Chandler was held on for a while around the very area Poirier was seated at. The two got into an intense verbal altercation and after some time had to be separated by UFC security.

The reason we saw it is only one man, Gilbert Burns, who was right next to Poirier filming it all as it went down. Durinho feels he deserves all the praise for making this fight happen while also proving the only viable promotional footage. He posted to Twitter asking the UFC to be recognised.
