James Krause, Brandon Moreno’s coach at UFC 277, announces retirement from fighting at age 36

James Krause

James Krause, the mastermind behind Brandon Moreno’s winning performance at UFC 277 that led the latter to win the interim flyweight championship belt, has announced retirement from fighting himself. Krause was fighting in the welterweight division of the UFC. Krause not only fought with an impressive record but simultaneously did his brilliant job in coaching through his gym, Glory MMA & Fitness.

What made Krause best known as a coach despite being a successful athlete? In the post-fight media scrum at UFC 277, Brandon Moreno, who is Krause’ first UFC champion, though interim, says He has been a championship-level coach for like a long time. I went with him for that. Everybody asked me why I went with him… I know maybe he doesn’t have like, too many champions like AKA or ATT or whatever but I can see his passion, I can see he is a crazy guy, a nerd who loves this sport and he will be there trying to get a title with me, so that’s what I thought of the decision to go with him…”

In an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, Krause talks about Moreno’s performance at UFC 277 against Kai Kara-France, if a fighter’s union will ever happen and much more. In the midst of all, Krause talks about his medical condition followed by an abrupt announcement of retirement.

“This last week for me, I had a herniated disk — I have a herniated disk in my neck — and it was giving me real problems going into that [UFC 277] fight week. And I was very close to just officially saying it. It’s hard for me to [say]. This is the problem with most fighters is, it’s hard to let that go. It’s really hard to let that go. But I could tell you with almost 100 per cent confidence that you guys will probably never see me fight again. And I’m good with that. I feel OK with that,” says Krause. [h/t MMA Fighting]

Krause is 28-8 in his overall MMA career with 22 wins via finishes and is known for his wins over the likes of Claudio Silva, Warlley Alves, Sergio Moraes, Alex White, Sam Stout and many more. For now, we can say Krause has done enough justice to MMA through his contributions to be remembered for generations to come, therefore deserving his break from the competitive part of the sport.
