“Instead of 3 cheques I take 1 home”- Kamaru Usman makes a SHOCKING comment about his DEVASTATING loss against Leon Edwards
Kamaru Usman
The “Nigerian Nightmare” Kamaru Usman sat down with TMZ to recap the events of UFC 278, and give an update on his health after falling prey to the “greatest kick” ever seen in the UFC, in the words of UFC commentator Joe Rogan. Despite being knocked out cold by Leon Edwards, Usman talked of how he is in “great spirits and health”, and that he recovered fast.
Detailing how it feels emotionally to lose a 15-fight win streak in blitzkrieg fashion, Usman simply said, “There are two kinds of hurt… and this is one where instead of two or three cheques I only take home one.” In the interview, Kamaru Usman did not look too fazed by getting knocked out, insisting that it’s all part of the “best sport in the world,” and that “I have done the same to so many people.”
Additionally, Usman told TMZ how he felt he dominated much of the fight, and that “People forget how the match was going because of one Hail Mary shot… much like in the last 10 seconds of the Super Bowl.”
Most would not have predicted Usman to lose the way he did, much less lose at all. He was a clear favorite the morning of the night, with the majority of the bookies placing their bets on Leon being defeated by a decision.
“He wanted a fight in London, now he’s got it” – Kamaru Usman details the plans for a rematch against Leon Rocky Edwards
The way UFC 278 unfolded threw into jeopardy many plans for the division and Kamaru Usman. Starting with the latter, Usman was expected to cruise to a dominant win and then possibly challenge for the Light Heavyweight title.
No more the 170 lb. king, Usman now has to set his sights back on the division he clearly dominated for around 5 years, till Leon Edwards stripped him off the throne. This also means that Khamzat Chimaev, if he beats Nate Diaz, will have to wait for a title shot till a trilogy between Usman and Edwards happens.
Speaking of the rematch, Usman talked of how he wishes to avenge his title in England, saying that “I want to go to England…I feel like England is my second home…its half Africa…the story could not have written itself better. He (Edwards) wanted a fight in London, now he’s got it.”
It must be added, however, that Usman was highly respectful of Leon Edwards’ journey, determination, and spectacular technique that led to the knockout. But as we have come to see, Kamaru Usman is not a gentle customer – he will return with ferocity. Echoing Dana White’s words, Usman confirmed the fight will take place in 2023, and most likely at Wembley.
