UFC veteran Michael Bisping revealed how he continued fighting in the UFC with just one eye. He narrated hilarious stories to Joe Rogan on the commentator’s podcast, ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’.

Michael Bisping has had an eclectic career in the UFC. The retired English MMA artist has been with the promotion since its initial ‘Strike Force’ days. With a professional record of 30 wins and 9 losses to his name, Bisping has been competing for a long time. He started back in 2004 and in 2016 became the UFC Middleweight Champion.

Now, it is important to note that Bisping became Middleweight Champion with one working retina. Back in 2013, Bisping faced Vitor Belfort. He lost the bout in the second round and the Brazilian left him with a detached retina. The damage was career-ending, and it only got worse from there.

Bisping had surgery on his eye, but eventually, it deteriorated to the point where he could only tell if the light was on or off. Bisping didn’t want to give up fighting. So he would memorize charts and he would just get doctors to pass his tests. Like this, Bisping went on to fight the next eleven fights of his UFC career, blind in one eye. He also defended his title against Dan Henderson at UFC 204 before eventually losing it to Georges St-Pierre in 2017.

After that, he fought once more at UFC Fight Night 122 in Shanghai, China before eventually bidding goodbye to the UFC. Bisping now enjoys his role as a sports analyst and UFC commentator. He has also done some acting and featured in a popular movie franchise with XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Bisping also has a popular YouTube channel where he analyzes and comments on the latest UFC events.

The fight against Vitor Belfort changed Michael Bisping’s life forever. His detached retina was diagnosed by doctors, who although declared him fit to fight, recommended him not to. He narrated the story to Joe Rogan on The Joe Rogan Experience.

“…And he’s like okay you’ve passed. He said listen, you’ve passed to fight but I wouldn’t fight because if anything happens to your good eye you’re gonna go blind.” But didn’t care if he went blind. All he cared about was getting back into the octagon. Bisping said he pretended to seem worried and that he would consider giving up and talking to his family. But truly, he was happy to be back.

He tells how he was always worried at the pre-game check-ins that he wouldn’t be allowed to fight. “So how’d you pass those?,” Joe Rogan asked. “They just didn’t check very good,” Bisping replied.

Bisping went on to fight eleven more fights, winning seven of them, including the UFC Middleweight title. To this day, he has issues like the perception of depth and judging the distance. “Sometimes it can f*ck with me a little bit. It can get a little blurry. I get a little dizzy,” he said.

Bisping was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2019.
