Despite the trend cooling off in the last few years, Ariel Helwani, the MMA journalist remains one of the most divisive figures in all of MMA. And, a novel development puts this into focus.
Starting from his time interviewing fighters in the first half of last decade, to being banned by UFC supremo Dana White from attending all events, it feels like Helwani has sort of paid the price for wanting to ‘keep it real’. Now, it seems like he has had White and his new poster boy Paddy Pimblett shovel more dirt at him.
Paddy Pimblett fights this weekend – as per the promotional routine, he sat down with Dana White in his podcast and the two delved into the routine questioning scheme. However, it all hit the fan when Pimblett started to talk about fighter pay. He said, “I hate all these journalists, especially the ones who earn off us. Ariel Helwani, in particular, loves earning money off fighters…He hates you, and he hates the UFC.”
The expletives only started to colour his sentences from this point forth. He said, “He uses fighters to make money… you [Helwani] are doing it to put money in your pocket, rodent.” At this juncture, Dana White chimed in and said, “He is a massive sack of f***ing s*** is what he is.” Pimblett rounded it off by saying, “He’s a ma**ot.”
Additionally, in the back and forth, Dana White also let his true feelings for Helwani known, calling him ‘one of the slimiest and scummiest mother****ers.’ It feels like someone finally let the UFC boss vent, after having kept his true feelings hidden for a couple of years.
How many times has Paddy Pimblett been interviewed by Ariel Helwani?
Paddy Pimblett’s promotion to a co-main event fighter in just over a year since his arrival to the UFC has marked the ascent of one of the roster’s hottest fighters right now. He sold out a rocking O2 Arena in July, and he will undoubtedly make his mark in Las Vegas.
That being said, it is interesting to note that even before he jumped on board the UFC ship, there was one journalist who was providing him with the platform to parade his true charismatic self. Harking back to the times when Pimblett was a Cage Warriors competitor, the promotion that also produced Conor McGregor, Ariel Helwani had the Liverpool native on his show twice before he hit the big leagues.
And, in his second appearance on the show, it seemed like the two maintained a great rapport with each other – Helwani also showed a great liking of Pimblett’s iconic walkout song. However, it seems like things have soured a touch since then. Now that Pimblett has taken to publicly humiliating Helwani, with his biggest nemesis in Dana White, it will be interesting to note how things proceed from here.
