Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley were scheduled for a monumental title fight later this year. But recent developments indicate that the two Bantamweights may not face each other anytime soon.

Dana White had earlier announced on social media that Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley will face each other in the octagon for the UFC 292 main event. The fight is scheduled at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts later in August. But the announcement seems to have taken the reigning UFC Bantamweight champion by surprise. He revealed that he is still recovering from the injuries from his last title fight at UFC 288 and had only verbally agreed to the fight with O’Malley.’

Sterling took on Henry Cejudo for his third title defense at UFC 288. Cejudo who was the returning former champion lost the bout via split decision. Right after that, Sean O’Malley appeared in the UFC octagon and faced off against Aljamain Sterling. The two engaged in a furious verbal discourse and were later separated by others present in the octagon.

Thus when he heard what Sterling said about their matchup announcement, O’Malley revealed that he intends to fight at UFC 292 whether Sterling shows up or not. “I’m showing up Aug. 19 whether ‘Aljo’ shows up or they put someone else in there,” O’Malley said on his ‘The Bro’Malley Show’. “Daddy’s there. Daddy’s main event, headlining for the belt regardless. Whether it’s him or not…it is what it is.”

Although Sean O’Malley ranks at #2 in the UFC Bantamweight rankings, he hasn’t had a title fight in his career. In his last fight, O’Malley beat Petr Yan at UFC 280 via split decision. This instilled in him the confidence to take on Aljamain Sterling for their scheduled face-off at UFC 292. Aljamain Sterling claimed the Bantamweight title from Petr Yan back in 2021 at UFC 259.

His recent response to the looming uncertainty of his first title fight is, “We’ll see how it plays out.” O’Malley had reportedly received the title fight against Sterling at UFC 288 but he let Henry Cejudo, who came back after a three-year hiatus, take on the ‘Funkmaster.’ Sterling has been doing main event title fights ever since his first title victory and O’Malley intends to put an end to his winning streak and take over as Bantamweight Champion.

He feels that the fight against Sterling is so far out that anything can happen in between. “It still feels kind of real, but it still feels so far out that I think once it gets a little closer…because there’s still big fights coming.” He believes they announced the fight prematurely and Dana White may have gotten too excited about the event.
