Wrestling practice can get a little risky with an elite grappler like Islam Makhachev. The UFC lightweight’s teammate can attest to that after a recent training session.

Thanks to filmmaker, Will Harris, creator of Anatomy of Fighter, we get to see exclusive footage of UFC fighters training up, close, and personal. In the recent episode of Prelude to UFC 280 which features fighters like Islam Makhachev, Belal Muhammad, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, and none other than Khabib Nurmagomedov, we get to see Makhachev accidentally submitting his training partner.

We are only a few weeks away from the much-awaited UFC 280 event that is headlined by Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev. Ahead of the fight, several training footages of both the fighters have surfaced on the internet and this clip of Makhachev accidentally submitting his opponent is just as impressive as the others.

“It was recorded,” says Makhachev to his training partner after letting go of him. The partner asks the Dagestani, “I slept?” as though he has only woken up from sleep. “He sleep, just woke up,” says Makhachev looking at the camera and laughing.

Islam Makhachev’s career has been closely watched right from the beginning. Being a close acquaintance of Khabib Nurmagomedov has been a gift and curse for the fighter from Makhachkala. Makhachev’s expectations have been through the roof after his teammate’s glorious career.

Makhachev has only one loss in his entire professional career. It came against Adriano Martins in his second UFC fight. where the Dagestani was knocked out in the very first round. Since then, Makhachev has been on a 10-fight win streak which has now earned him a title shot against Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira.

Islam has finished four opponents in the last year and a half. Though Makhachev has run through all his opponents, many believe he has been offered a title shot, prematurely, given he has no wins against top-ranked opponents. Makhachev’s fight against Oliveira at UFC 280 will answer if the Dagestani truly belongs at the top of the stacked lightweight division.
