Islam Makhachev is currently training for his upcoming lightweight title defense against Alex Volkanovski at UFC 284. The fighter is from his hometown Dagestan where he’s training in extremely cold conditions. Popular YouTubers, the NELK BOYS recently got together with Makhachev and his team as they were invited to Dagestan to train and spend some time together.
According to reports, it was Islam Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz who made the meeting possible. The NELK BOYS have posted a series of social media posts where they can be seen doing intense training with the champion. The NELK BOYS participated in long runs in freezing temperatures which was extremely grueling for them. Kyle Forgeard was even brave enough to replicate Makhachev’s popular ice water plunge which is followed by a dry snow bath and then directly jumping into a hot sauna.
Makhachev makes it look normal however, for Forgeard it was definitely not that easy as he continued to scream throughout the routine. Both groups also spend some quality time together eating food and celebrating. It is safe to say that the NELK BOYS did get great hosting from Islam Makhachev.
Chael Sonnen doesn’t think Islam Makhachev’s UFC career would be long enough
Islam Makhachev’s next target is Alexander Volkanovski however, things will be a little different this time for the champion. A few days ago, Makhachev’s coach and former UFC Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov announced that he will no longer be a part of MMA.
This raised questions regarding, Islam Makhachev‘s longevity as a titleholder. According to Chael Sonnen, it’s going to be tough for the Dagestani to do it without the presence of Nurmagomedov.
He said: “I cannot realistically imagine a scenario where Islam Makhachev, in his career, goes into a bigger match. This feels to me like one heck of a matzah ball that just got sat down, that your trainer, mentor, and coach is not going to be training, mentoring, or coaching you. It feels like a big deal.”
Makhachev himself used to say that having Nurmagomedov in his corner was a cheat code as his knowledge of grappling is second to none. This has helped Makhachev in the past to get crucial wins over his opponents. It will be interesting to see how the career of the reigning champion will shape out.
