Conor McGregor is a name that is currently synonymous with the essence of combat sports culture. The former 2-division champion is widely famous even outside the scope of UFC altogether. However, back in 2013-2014, that wasn’t quite the case. ‘The Notorious’ had a not-so-notorious decision win over Max Holloway in 2013. This was on the prelim card of UFC Fight Night 26, where Mauricio Rua hashed off with Chael Sonnen; ‘The Shogun’ however, had quite a reaction to the Dubliner before the fight.
Rare surfaced footage shows Rua and Sonnen standing side by side, at the ceremonial weigh-in. CEO and taskmaster Dana White ushers Holloway and the Irishman, who shake on it and pose for the cameras on the forefront. A bowtie-totting McGregor, wearing a cap, can be seen uncharacteristically posing; Rua on the other hand could not check his grins from behind.
McGregor is infamous for his untamed rigor and brashness. The fighter has repeatedly gone viral for his unhinged tweets and voiceover notes on X. Boasting some of the best quotable one-liners in MMA history, McGregor holds quite the fandom. But as apparent, this wasn’t always the case.
In his early tenure, McGregor held quite the quippy and load-free disposition; hence comes the reaction. The caption on the video on X read – “Shogun Rua can’t take Conor McGregor serious.” And rightfully so. Concurrently, this is not the only response that fans have pitched in.
Fight fans react to Mauricio Rua’s fun reflex to Conor McGregor
‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor holds on to his Octagon moniker for feasible reasons. His role as a fan-favorite fighter has made him a household name amongst MMA enthusiasts. Other than that, McGregor is a business entrepreneur, avid MMA promoter, and even a recent Hollywood debutante.
Holding his place steady as one of the richest UFC Fighters in MMA history, the Irishman is a go-to template for the combat sports industry. But this wasn’t always the case. Back in 2013, McGregor was fighting on the prelim cards at TD Garden, Boston. While Mauricio Rua headlined the event.
Conversely, Rua had a peculiar recoil at the young fighter. And here’s how fight fans have reacted to that resurfaced footage –
McGregor is quite the force within the promotion. Aspiring for a 185lbs debut, the fighter may return at UFC’s International Fight Week in June, for UFC 302. Even away from the ring, McGregor has opened up a slight betting favorite over Michael Chandler in his UFC return, for oddsmakers.
There is no denying McGregor’s monumental rise to fame. And despite the initial reaction, many older peers would say the same now.
