“You were out cold” – When Joe Rogan got into argument with fighter after bizarre “self knockout” finish to a fight
Joe Rogan and Gray Maynard interview
Joe Rogan could not help but get into an argument with former UFC fighter Gray Maynard in The Ultimate Fighter 5 post-fight interview. Following a controversial decision, Maynard decided to use his time on the microphone to protest the decision.
Gray Maynard took on Rob Emerson at The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale back in 2007. The two lightweights fought amazingly only for a bizarre end to the bout. Maynard, known to be a crazy fighter inside the octagon, slammed his opponent to the floor and accidentally knocked himself out unconscious. The referee decided to call the fight a ‘No Contest’ which upset Maynard very much.
Joe Rogan, who was in charge of the post-fight octagon interview believed the fighter was indeed knocked out. Maynard, who refused to stop arguing about his consciousness got shut down by Rogan who said, “Bro…bro…look at the replay, you picked him up, watch the dump, and then bang! You hit your head down and you’re out,” said Gray Maynard.
Maynard’s eyes were visibly rolled back in his head and Rogan wouldn’t hold back in this interview. The UFC commentary veteran is known for his composure but this time, even Rogan could not tolerate Maynard’s denial. The lightweight fighter claimed he was not unconscious and was only looking for a moment of breath as he rolled away from his opponent.
Joe Rogan hates interviewing fighters after a knockout and here’s why
Joe Rogan has been interviewing fighters for more than two decades. A lot of changes have happened in the UFC and one of them is with the production team. Rogan, after the Stipe Miocic vs Allistair Overeem fight, was adamant he would not interview fighters after they had been knocked out cold. However, Rogan at his own fault, interviewed his friend, Daniel Cormier after a devastating knockout loss to Jon Jones.

In a recent episode of his podcast, Rogan discussed about interviewing fighters after they’ve been knocked out. One of the main reasons the UFC commentator believes no one should be interviewed after a knockout is because one will never know the seriousness or the aftermath of the knockout other than the victim himself. “I don’t think you’ll really ever know because a lot of people will talk on auto-pilot,” said Rogan on how bad the fighters’ minds are after being knocked out.
A lot of the fighters barely remember hours after they’ve been knocked out. Rogan believes this is one of the main reasons why it’s silly to interview fighters that have been KO’d. These days we rarely see Rogan or any other octagon interviewer, talking to a fighter that has taken a lot of damage.
