Jon Jones made history at UFC 285 by becoming the new UFC heavyweight champion by defeating Cyril Gane via first-round submission. Jones shocked everyone after coming back to UFC after three years and reminding them why he’s the GOAT of MMA.
Jones’ last fight was the light heavyweight title at UFC 247 against challenger Dominick Reyes in 2020. After that, the fighter dissolved his title and announced his heavyweight debut. It took three long years for Jones to bulk up and he was comfortable as a heavyweight. On top of it, Jones’ personal life also suffered a lot of ups and downs. In 2021, the fighter was jailed for domestic violence and his fiancee also left him.
After the incident, Jones was also kicked out of his gym in New Mexico and had a difference of opinion with his former striking coach, Mike Winkeljohn. After fighting through all those problems, Jones finally came back and it felt like he never left.

Fighting through these adversities wasn’t enough as Jon Jones also defeated some of the biggest curses in UFC history. Interestingly, going into the fight fans had numerous assumptions about curses which might have affected Jones’ fight. But Jones just broke all the curses that were made beforehand in the fight. One of them is the iconic Drake curse which has been ruining fighters for a long time. Every time, the rapper puts his bet on any fighter, he or she loses the fight. However, with Jones, it wasn’t the case.
The second one is the haircut curse which has something to do with fighters getting haircuts in the UFC Embedded series ahead of the fight. Historically, Luke Rockhold, Rose Namajunas, and Conor McGregor are some of the biggest names who lost their fights after getting a haircut. But Jones even after doing the same didn’t lose the fight and survived the curse.
The last one is the famous leg break curse which is essentially a picture of Chris Weidman, Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, and Anderson Silva was taken years ago. After that, all three fighters other than Jones suffered critical leg injuries in their careers. While Jones didn’t snap his leg in half against Gane, it is possible to say it can happen in the future but for now, everything is fine.
