Who won Jon Jones vs Daniel Cormier 2?
Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones at UFC 214 face off
Jon Jones vs Daniel Cormier is one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the UFC. From mass brawls at the pre-fight press conference to death threats on air, this rivalry had it all. It began with the pair’s first fight at UFC 182 in January 2015. Jones was the defending light-heavyweight champion back then.
Jones won the first fight via. unanimous decision. It was Daniel Cormier’s first-ever loss in his MMA career. The brutal war saw both the fighters win the Fight of The Night Bonuses. Just three months later Jones was stripped of his light-heavyweight title since he violated UFC’s Athlete Code of Conduct Policy. Their harsh rivalry didn’t end there, it later continued 2 and a half years later at UFC 214. So who won the rematch?
The fight ends pretty quickly this time!
The rematch was set to take place at UFC 214 on the 29th of July 2017. Jones after going through a period of trials and tribulations between 2015 and 2017 was the interim light-heavyweight champion, whereas Cormier was the light-heavyweight champion. Hence, the bout went ahead as a title-unification fight.
The five-round match saw Jones knockout Daniel Cormier in the third round after a vicious head kick and a flurry of punches. This was the first time Cormier was ever knocked out in his career. Jones thereby won the light-heavyweight championship, and DC’s title defense was breached.
The final twist in the tale!
Just 3 weeks after beating Cormier, Jones‘ test sample which he had given a day before his rematch against DC, was put under the scanner. And, on September 13 the California State Athletic Commission ruled that Jones’ sample tested positive for a turinabol metabolite and ruled the fight as a no-contest. Jones was also stripped off his light-heavyweight title, and it was handed back to Cormier.
After a series of hearings, Jones was banned for a period of 15 months, starting from the 29th of July 2017. He was eligible to compete again on the 28th of October 2018. Hence the rivalry ended with Jones still having the lead 1-0.
