Why was Cedric Doumbe not signed by the UFC?

Doumbe was set to make his debut in the UFC at UFC Paris 1 in September 2022. However, he was pulled from the event after an MRI scan revealed blood in his brain. Multiple doctors cleared Doumbe after that, but the UFC reportedly remained concerned about his health. The Frenchman said that he underwent several tests and was cleared by doctors in France and the United States but that the UFC was still not convinced. He also said he was willing to undergo any further testing that the UFC may require.

However, the botched medical scan was not the only reason for the Frenchman’s failed contract. The French MMA Federation would not authorize the match under the commission’s standards. It stated that combatants with fewer than ten professional fights between them should not have a fight difference of more than four. This led to the Frenchman being released.

Cedric Doumbe picks between UFC vs. PFL

After being released from the UFC, Doumbe went on to sign a deal with the PFL. He believed he was offered a more lucrative contract by the PFL. Doumbe revealed publically that he was being offered $40,000 to show up and fight in the UFC. However, the PFL was ready to pay him $140,000 per fight. PFL President Ray Sefo had high hopes in Doumbe’s abilities.

Doumbe followed fellow Cameroonian and friend Francis Ngannou into the PFL. Both fighters have advocated for fighter pay and have called to the UFC for its low fighter pay. Whatever the reason, Doumbé is now fighting in the PFL, where he is one of the top welterweight contenders.
