‘What she did is separate people’ – Yan Xiaonan is unhappy with Rose Namajunas

Yan Xiaonan and Rose Namajunas

Yan Xiaonan will be facing Carla Esparza this weekend in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Garbrandt vs Font. A win here for Xiaonan might probably set her up for a title shot, as she sits at number 3 in the strawweight rankings. And now, it looks like there is a bit of bad blood going on between her and the strawweight champion Rose Namajunas.

Namajunas had brought politics into sports when she was scheduled to take on Zhang Weili at UFC 261. Her comments about China didn’t sit well with the Chinese, despite ‘Thug Rose’ claiming that she didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s sentiments, and it was just the passion for her country boiling over.

I don’t think she should bring politics into sports‘ – Yan Xiaonan

Speaking in an interview with South China Morning Post, Yan Xiaonan stated that she didn’t like Namajunas bringing politics into sports. She then went on to add that, sports was the perfect medium to unite people, but Namajunas had separated them (Weili and ‘Thug Rose’) instead.

Xiaonan was quoted as saying, “I don’t like that, I don’t think she should bring politics into sports. Sports is a way to unite people. What she did is separate people. I don’t like that. Everyone can have his or her own opinion. She can say what she wants, she can’t change anything.” [via MMA Mania]

Can Yan Xiaonan take the Women’s strawweight division by storm?

Xiaonan is looking like the next big thing in the women’s strawweight division. She hasn’t tasted defeat ever since joining the UFC. She is unbeaten in the promotion since 2017!

And surely now, a win against Esparza will give her the best opportunity to challenge Namajunas herself. She might even want to go out and exact revenge for her fellow countrywoman Zhang Weili.
