WATCH: Lamont Marcell Jacobs ‘makes it look easy’ while becoming only the 3rd man to claim consecutive Olympic and European C’ships 100m titles
Lamont Marcell Jacobs
Lamont Marcell Jacobs has been in the limelight for quite a while, especially as the sprinter created history at the last year’s Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Italian to qualify and win the men’s 100m finals at the Olympic Games. Since then Jacobs has gone off the grid, and has not competed in many events. After an injury riddled season, Jacobs was seen at a competition recently, and has now won the gold medal in the men’s 100m event at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich.
After a difficult year, the 27-year-old finished his race with a time of 9.95s to claim the top spot. He finished ahead of Zharnel Hughes, who finished with a time of 9.99s and Hughes’ teammate, Jeremiah Azu, who finished in 10.13s. By winning the gold medal, Lamont Jacobs became only the third man in history to win the Olympic golf and the European Championships title back to back.
Valreiy Borzov of the Soviet Union and Great Britian’s Linford Christie are the only other two athletes to do so in the past. This victory is a great boost for Jacobs, who has been getting a bit of criticism for his disappearance since the Olympics. “Coming here and showing that I am the best is something beautiful that motivates me to push even harder,” said Jacobs according to CNN.
What does the future hold for Lamont Marcell Jacobs?
“I’m very happy with this result. It wasn’t my best race from a technical point of view and the time is not what I wanted, but it mattered crossing the line first after an outdoor season so complicated and full of injuries,” Jacobs said after the race. “Being forced to withdraw from the semifinals at the World championships was a big disappointment, but next year, there’s going to be another championships and all my motivation will be to do well there,” he said. Jacobs also went on to thank those who had criticised him. “I want to say thank you to the people who have been supporting me, and also to the people who criticized me because they gave me the energy to show that I’m the best. Jacobs said that he felt better in the semifinal run than the final run. “I’d like to watch it again as I think I ran better in the semifinal. Maybe, I was too tense and I didn’t start well, then I managed to recover speed, but it was important to finish ahead,” said the sprinter.
