Banter and trolls are a part and parcel of any sport, but in the NBA, one can argue that it’s on another level. However, ahead of the Boston Celtics vs Dallas Mavericks Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals, the Mavs star man Luka Doncic was involved in a bittersweet situation. While Doncic was at his usual best against the Celtics, his performance was not enough to guarantee his side a win at the TD Garden.
Before the game started, Luka Doncic was taking pictures and autographs with fan after fan, including several Celtics fans. A small child near the tunnel then thanked the Mavs’ Doncic for the picture and then remarked, “You know it’s still Celtics in 4?” Without replying, Doncic left through the tunnel and returned to the Mavs’ locker room.
Doncic might take advice or inspiration from the fan’s troll that a sweep is imminent given the Mavs’ current 2-0 series deficit. Luka was on the losing side of Game 2 despite recording a game-high 33 points. It is worth noting that he was considered questionable before the game but was cleared to play an hour before tip-off.
Luka Doncic makes honest admission after going 2-0 down in NBA Finals
The Dallas Mavericks offensive players were at their lowest in Game 2 against the Boston Celtics, with only Luka Doncic showing up for his side. Frustratingly, they committed 15 turnovers, made 6 of 26 (23.1%) field goals, and only managed 16 of 24 (66.7%) free throws. Despite Doncic’s eight turnovers and his four of eight free throw shooting, the Mavs only made two of 17 (11.8%) long-range shots overall. After the game, Doncic made an honest admission regarding his side’s shooting.
We've got to make some more shots, I think my turnovers and my missed free throws cost us the game. So I've got to do way better in those two categories.Luka Doncic said in the post-game presser
Doncic’s teammate Kyrie Irving also took the blame as he asserted, “it’s on all of us” in the same presser. Irving found it difficult to penetrate the Celtics’ on-ball defense, which in turn made it difficult to give Doncic the proper support he needed.
With the Mavs 2-0 down in this series, Luka Doncic and Irving will be seeking revenge in the upcoming games against the Boston Celtics. On a brighter note for the Dallas team, they have been at their flying best at their home court, the American Airlines Center. Hence, it will be intriguing to watch how this series unfolds in the coming weeks.
