“Created history, inspired millions”: Twitter beams with pride as 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinches a gold with CWG Record in weightlifting

The 2022 Commonwealth Games hastarted, and needless to say the excitement and the competition is high. India’s medal rush this morning continued, as Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a gold in the men’s 67kg category. This is the fifth medal that India have bagged in weightlifting in just 2 days since it began. Apart from the youngster, Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu has also taken a gold medal on the women’s side.
Jeremy created a new Commonwealth Games Record in the snatch event after lifting a whopping 140kg. He lifted a total of 160kg in the clean and jerk segment to finish with a total of 300kg, which is also a new Commonwealth Games record. While the youngster looked injured during his 165kg attempt-which he failed- he was working closely with the Indian coaches. Joy was immeasurable for the youngster, as he clinched the yellow metal in a dominant display of strength.

Jeremy always had it in him to win a medal, said many twitterati. In May this year, he posted a photo of the CWG medal as his phone wall paper. Needless to say, the youngster has since then been on a great path achieving his dreams. He managed to lift 300kgs to secure his win and fulfil his dreams.

The 19-year-old, from Aizawl in Mizoram, had won the gold in the 62kg event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and also won a gold in the 67kg category in the Commonwealth Championships last year. This year he managed to beat Samoa’s veteran lifter Vaipava Ioane who won the silver (293kg), and Nigeria’s Edidiong Umoafia who took bronze (290kg).
This means that now five of India’s medals have been clinched in weightlifting. Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Mirabai Chanu both picked up historic gold medals in their categories. On the other hand, Sanket Sargar and Bidyarani Devi won surprise silvers, while Gururaj Poojary took a bronze.
