The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held for the first time in 2017. This Formula 1 racing event is held on the Baku City Circuit. It has a deal to remain in the Formula 1 calendar until 2024, after which the contract expires. The first Formula, One race in Azerbaijan, was in 2016, the European Grand Prix. The name changed to Azerbaijan GP in 2017, and the race was held in the same venue.

It was one of the five street races ( Singapore, Monaco, Australia, and Canada) to be held in 2017. The first winner of the Baku circuit was “The Honey Badger”, Daniel Ricciardo. It was during his glory days with Red Bull Racing. The 2018 Azerbaijan GP was the fourth round of the season. Mercedes champion Lewis Hamilton won the race.

Valtteri Bottas won the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix for Mercedes. In 2020, the race was postponed due to the pandemic and was later canceled. Sergio Perez won the 2021 street race at Baku, and the two-time world champion Max Verstappen won the 2022 race. There are no repeat winners at the Baku City Circuit. Mercedes and Red Bull are the only teams who have won there.

Red Bull Racing won the constructors in Baku in 2017, 2021 and 2022. It makes them the most successful team. They are closely followed by Mercedes, who won twice in 2018 and 2019. However, this is without taking Nico Rosberg’s 2016 win into account. Because it was known as the European GP back then. Red Bull has dominated the track with Ricciardo, Perez, and Verstappen.

In the 2022 season, though Perez took the lead initially, Verstappen had a strong pace. He zoomed past the Mexican and took the lead. It was his maiden win in Baku and also his 25th career win. Verstappen was tied to great names like Jim Clark and Niki Lauda. It was also special for Red Bull as it was their 81st win in Formula 1.

The 2023 Baku F1 race is scheduled for April 28th-30th. It is a highly anticipated race as F1 will experiment with a new sprint race format. There will be a practice session and qualifying for the feature race on Friday, Sprint qualifying and race on Saturday, and the feature race on Sunday. The team bosses think it will be a chaotic race with many crashes.
