What are the conditions for Brittney Griner’s release?
Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner has finally been released from her horrifying sentencing for carrying illegal substances through Russian airport customs. The WNBA Superstar often makes trips to the country since she plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg team. But this time, things took a turn for thr worse after cannabis oil cartridges were found in his luggage as a result of hasty packing.
The Phoenix Mercury legend was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty of her crime back in August. Prior to which she served in a detention center since February. After almost 11 months of struggle, Brittney Griner has been given the green light to come back to the United States of America.
There were no specific conditions laid forth for Brittney Griner to fulfil. Joe Biden and his administration had proposed a prisoner swap idea when she was initially sentenced. Many believed that she was wrongfully detained but the usage and possession of drugs is highly punishable in Russia. Griner served at the Russian Penal Colony which were the worst conditions to be in as a prisoner.
According to CBS, the swap first included Brittney Griner as well as former Marine Paul Whelan, who was captured by the Russians for suspected espionage. However, the deal was only approved for a swap between Griner and Viktor Bout, who was sentenced to 25-years for illegally exporting weaponry.
Joe Biden on bringing back Brittney Griner to the United States
Joe Biden, the US President announced at the White House that Griner will return back to native soil. “After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones and she should have been there all along. This is a day we’ve worked toward for a long time. We never stopped pushing for her release,” he said.
Obviously, their plan to help Paul Whelan back home backfired. But Biden revealed that they were still making efforts to bring him back to the States. Whelan on the other hand spoke to CNN claiming he was extremely saddened by the fact that not much effort was out towards his release, especially since it has been four years of his sentencing.
