The battle between WWE and AEW has led to one of the most entertaining weeks for the wrestling fans
Punk and Lesnar appeared for WWE and AEW respectively
WWE and AEW have been involved in a battle for quite some time now, and evidently, the battle is now fiercer than ever. All of this began, when the news of CM Punk, one of the biggest stars of the professional wrestling, was rumored to appear on All Elite Wrestling.
Interestingly, AEW never officially announced Punk’s appearance, but their marketing was such, that the news spread like wildfire. The event was being held in Punk’s home city of Chicago. It was being called as The First Dance. All of this led to the event selling out in just 4 minutes!
When Punk finally appeared, it was one of the largest pops that has ever been heard in the industry. Punk rightfully deserved it too – after all he was coming out of retirement after 7 years. People were crying in the crowd when they saw their star return, kicking off this battle between WWE and AEW.
Interestingly, this was happening during WWE’s Summerslam week, and right after Smackdown’s go-home episode for the Biggest Party of the Summer. Surprisingly, a couple of weeks ago, during an investor call WWE CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon had announced that WWE and AEW weren’t competitors. But they definitely had to come up with something that would ensure people talk about WWE.
WWE Summerslam 2021 and NXT TakeOver 36 took place during the same weekend
This weekend 4 WWE shows were scheduled to air – in as many days. Friday Night Smackdown was followed by Summerslam on Saturday, NXT TakeOver 36 on Sunday and the Monday Night Raw. Three of these have already aired and clearly WWE went all out with the surprises.
The Smackdown episode had the Reigns – Cena promo battle, complimented by the return of Edge’s Brood gimmick. At Summerslam massive Superstars – Brock Lesnar and Becky Lynch returned. This wasn’t all – 4 Championships out of 7 that were on the line, changed hands, including the Smackdown Women’s Championship for Lynch. The event had an official attendance of over 50,000!
NXT TakeOver have been famous for delivering brutal bouts with high-quality storytelling. Same was the case with TakeOver 36. Some memorable bouts were delivered – with Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly’s 2-out-of-3 falls match stealing the show. Karrion Kross suffered his first loss on NXT, allowing Samoa Joe to become the first-ever 3-time NXT Champion.
Reportedly, the feud between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns was being planned for later but the emergence of Punk led to WWE preponing the feud. WWE never really stood a chance of eclipsing the excitement for CM Punk’s return.
But what they could do was to ensure that the fans weren’t disappointed from the WWE shows. That is what they managed to do exactly. Overall, WWE and AEW ensured that the week had something for every kind of wrestling fan and would’ve definitely brought back several fans who had stopped watching!
