WWE Day 1: Major update on Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar match

Reigns and Lesnar

WWE Day 1 is still three weeks away but the company has already announced several blockbuster matches on the card. With the new PPV, WWE is aiming to make it a annual fixture for the first day of the year. Reportedly, their post-Halloween PPVs do not draw in massive numbers, as a result of which, the December PPV has made for WWE Day 1.

The company is aiming to pack the card as heavily as possible to make it their one of the biggest events of the year. The main event of the night has already been announced. The Universal Champion Roman Reigns will be once again stepping inside the squared circle along with the “Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar.

The two of the biggest Superstars in the company today, last collided a couple of months ago at WWE Crown Jewel 2021. Due to interferences from The Usos and some questionable actions from Paul Heyman, led to Reigns pinning Lesnar. Post this, Lesnar was suspended from the company. He was expected to return sometime in 2022, and restart the feud for a match at Royal Rumble.

But Lesnar made a surprise return to Smackdown last week and immediately challenged Reigns for a match at WWE Day 1. This surprised many, because a feud as massive as Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns should’ve taken place at a major WWE event, rather than a new PPV. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter recently revealed the plans for the upcoming main-event match.

”At this point, Reigns vs. Lesnar is scheduled to be a match designed to have a big finish that would leave people wanting a rematch, which at this point would be the WrestleMania main event.” mentioned Meltzer. This essentially means that the feud will not be concluding at Day 1 and we might get a rematch at the Showcase of Immortals.

The company is leaving no stone unturned with WWE Day 1. They are planning to make it a regular event on their calendar and for this they need to ensure a very impressive card. With a couple of weeks still to go for the event, only 4 matches have been announced and more are likely to be added.

The card currently includes:

  • Universal Championship match: Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar
  • WWE Championship match: Big E vs Seth Rollins vs Kevin Owens
  • Smackdown Tag Team Championship match: The Usos vs The New Day
