“You think you know me!” were the words followed by Metalingus that made the fans jump off their seats on October 1, 2023. Adam Copeland made his AEW debut at WrestleDream and did justice to all the rumors that surrounded the internet. He showed up with his ‘Rated R Superstar’ moniker to help Sting and Darby Allin from Christian Cage, Luchasaurus, and Nick Wayne’s Wrath.
Reports are that his contract with WWE expired on September 30, which gave him leeway to join AEW. Better known as Edge in WWE, he was a part of the SmackDown roster as a part-timer. He signed his contract back in 2020, coming back from retirement and shockingly entered Royal Rumble at No. 21.
His last full-time run happened during his feud with The Judgment Day. Edge battled with the heel faction during the fall of 2022. He wrestled a total of seven matches in WWE this year, which kicked off with his involvement in a Royal Rumble match. Let us take a look at Edge’s last five matches of his WWE career:
5. Edge vs. Austin Theory for United States Championship on Raw
Right after Elimination Chamber, Edge wrestled Austin Theory for the United States Championship. The match, set for the February 20, 2023 episode of Monday Night Raw, emanated from Ottawa, Canada. It was set for the main event of the show, giving Edge the spotlight in his home country.
The expectation on Edge was to lose the match and give Theory momentum going into WrestleMania 39. Finn Balor, who had the intention of continuing his rivalry, supported the idea. His interference cost The Ultimate Opportunist the title shot and saw his defeat by the champ.
4. Edge vs. Finn Balor inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 39
The aftermath of Edge’s defeat saw him end a feud with Finn Balor for one last time. Their previous match happened at Extreme Rules PLE with an “I Quit” stipulation. But to increase the stakes, the WWE Hall of Famer competed against Finn Balor inside the Hell in a Cell structure at WrestleMania 39.
The Judgment Day member brought his demonic persona against Edge on Night 2 of WrestleMania 39. On the other hand, the Rated-R superstar brought his Brood gimmick. Finn Balor bled in the match as he performed high-risk maneuvers for his win. The closed structure disallowed the faction from interfering and gave Edge his victory.
3. Edge vs. AJ Styles vs. Rey Mysterio on SmackDown
Edge was absent from WWE for a month before returning during the 2023 WWE Draft. Drafted to SmackDown, he entered the tournament for the new World Heavyweight Championship, competing in a triple-threat match against two top contenders.
His opponents were Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles in the match. All three men delivered an incredible showdown on the episode of SmackDown. Expectations were for him to get the spot and later compete with the winner of the other triple threat match. But Styles overpowered this time and won the bout to crash Edge’s dreams of claiming the title.
2. Edge vs. Grayson Waller on SmackDown at MSG
The second-last match of Edge’s WWE run came at Madison Square Garden in a main event. The Friday Night SmackDown episode being the fallout of Money of the Bank saw the Rated-R superstar on the Grayson Waller Effect. The Aussie Icon Grayson Waller got under the skin of Edge, turning it into a match later.
This was the first time Edge appeared on SmackDown since losing the first round of the Heavyweight Championship tournament. It was a pretty predictable match and the 49-year-old picked up the win. This was to give Grayson Waller the spotlight as he wrestled Edge and headlined MSG.
1. Edge vs. Sheamus on SmackDown
August 18, 2023, was the last time Edge competed in WWE. The Hall of Famer wrestled in his hometown of Toronto against his long-time friend Sheamus. The two delivered an incredible match, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. While it was speculated to be his last match in WWE, it came true later.
The Rated-R superstar stated earlier that Sheamus was the reason he came out of retirement in 2020. Thus, to come back full circle, he was willing to face him for the first time in a one-on-one action. The match ended with an emotional segment as both men hugged it out after the match. It was Edge’s last chapter in his illustrious WWE career.
