It has been rumored for months that John Cena is going to return to WWE. The 16-time world champion is rumored to face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

John Cena was last seen in WWE at WrestleMania 36 where he battled the Fiend in a Firefly Fun House match. The match was one of the best cinematic matches in WWE history and was a blockbuster. Cena lost the match and didn’t return to the ring since then. But the rumors suggest that he could make a return soon.

John and Roman Reigns have history with each other

The previous reports said the SummerSlam is set to take place on August 21, in Las Vegas and Cena would not be present. These speculations were made after Variety reported that the franchise player would be filming in Europe at that time.

Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Radio Observer has given a huge update over Cena’s return. The update suggests that the SummerSlam main event between John Cena and Roman Reigns is confirmed and that the movie dates wouldn’t be a problem. Here’s what the report said:

“The movie thing is not a hurdle. This is what I was told today. The movie thing’s not a hurdle, and whatever it is, I don’t know exactly what it is, but the belief is it’s all going down. So, the match is happening.”

Another report Fightful Select gave another huge update on his return. The report said that Cena would make a surprise return on the July 23 edition of SmackDown and tease the dream match. Here’s what their report said:

“Cena is scheduled to appear on WWE programming at some point over the next eleven days, as fans return. Fightful has been told that the working plan for Cena is for him to appear on the July 23 episode of WWE Smackdown, and possibly sooner than that.”

If the reports are true and Cena makes a surprise entrance on SmackDown after Money in the Bank, it could be another huge build up for a dream match. Reigns and Cena have previously battled at No Mercy where Reigns defeated Cena in an impactful match. If the WWE Universe gets a taste of that match again at the biggest event of Summer, it would be icing on the cake.
