If WWE keeps teasing like they did on SmackDown, one has to believe that CM Punk might be on his way back to the fold. On the show, the production team put up the hype graphic for the Last Man Standing match between Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura. They’re going to collide for the World Heavyweight Championship at Fastlane. That said, the interesting part came when Corey Graves decided to fit in a CM Punk reference.

When Seth Rollins’ face flashed up on the screen, Graves said, “The greatest thing the Devil ever did was make you people believe he never existed“. Although he said that about a potential Money in the Bank cash-in from Damian Priest during that match at Fastlane, it means much more. The line is an exact callback to CM Punk’s infamous Ring of Honor promo from back in the day.

Well, it’s not the first time WWE has made such a reference. This week on Raw, while interviewing Rollins, Michael Cole adjudged him the puppet against Shinsuke Nakamura. And if one looks closer, that was yet another thing that defined Punk during his reign at ROH.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful said that if CM Punk returns, he’d first have to mend fences with other stars. On the other hand, Nick Hausman of ‘Haus of Wrestling’ said that a WWE source told him that expecting Punk at the Survivor Series this year in Chicago is a “safe bet.”

Is WWE planning for Seth Rollins vs. CM Punk?

According to reports, no deal has been made between CM Punk and WWE as of now. There’s no rush, and the WWE officials believe that Phil will return if they offer him a contract. As of now, the confidence within the company is that the ball lies in their court. Why are such teases happening during Seth Rollins‘ segments only? Could it mean something? Well, it might be.

In the past, The Visionary has been pretty vocal about his disdain for CM Punk. He even called The Second City Saint a cancer for the locker room. There’s some rift between the two, which has to settle well in time if Punk expects to be back inside a WWE ring.

While it’s still early, ongoing teases with Rollins as the focal point could hint at a potential showdown with CM Punk at WrestleMania 40. WWE might be internally planning this matchup if Punk returns to the company.
