WWE Backlash kicked off in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the opening match where Bianca Belair put her WWE Raw Women’s Championship on the line against Iyo Sky. However, fans were not be pleased with the outcome of the match.
Bianca Belair was successful in her defense against Sky after putting up an outstanding performance. Bayley and Dakota Kai later joined in to create distractions and help the challenger. However, it backfired as the referee caught Bayley, thus giving Belair time to recover. The crowd in San Juan was loud and vocal for the opening bout as well.
This was Sky’s first women’s championship match opportunity at a Premium Live Event. Debuting on the main roster in July of last year, Io Sky has been a part of the stable with Dakota Kai and Bayley called Damage CTRL. They have mostly been feuding with Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair throughout this time. Iyo Sky, as a part of Damage CTRL, fought against the team of Lita, Trish Stratus, and Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 39 in April of this year.
Bianca Belair has been a champion for more than a year now. With this successful defense, she becomes the longest-reigning Raw Women’s Champion in modern history. Belair has defeated the likes of Becky Lynch, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Bayley, etc. over her 400+-day title reign.
