WWE arguably pulled off the biggest comeback in the company’s history. In the age of the internet, WWE did the impossible by keeping CM Punk’s return a closely guarded secret until the very last minute. The final moments of the Survivor Series 2023 were closed out by a returning Punk. Having said that, former WWE superstar Ryback backtracked on his words after vowing to retire if CM Punk returned to WWE.
Exactly a day before the Survivor Series, Ryback took to his X and made a preliminary announcement of his in-ring retirement. He stated that he would retire from his pro wrestling career if the Second City Saint returned on November 25. Now that CM Punk has officially signed with WWE, the 42-year-old superstar has rowed back on his earlier comments.
Not only did Ryback make false promises of retirement, but he also cleverly promoted his nutrition supplement brand simultaneously. Backtracking on his words, the 42-year-old stated that he would not be retiring as Punk returned to WWE and not AEW. He slyly claimed that he was referring to the Straight Edge Superstar’s AEW return in the original tweet.
I will not be retiring. He had to return to AEW and that did not happen. Thank you for supporting @FMMNutrition (wink emoji)Ryback on X
Nonetheless, Ryback hasn’t stepped inside a wrestling ring in years. His last wrestling match took place in 2018. The superstar was contracted with WWE from 2010 to 2016 until he was released by the company. Moreover, the 42-year-old has a long-standing beef with CM Punk. The former took exception to Punk after he accused Ryback of being an unsafe worker in WWE.
An ecstatic CM Punk interacts with his fans waiting outside Allstate Arena
CM Punk’s return to the Stamford-based promotion came as a major shocker to the WWE Universe. Given the bitter history, no one pictured Punk ever returning to the company. However, the two parties reinforced the adage “never say never.” Following his spectacular return at Survivor Series, the Straight Edge Superstar took time to interact with his fans outside the arena.
The 45-year-old was seen outside the arena after closing out the premium live event. Punk came out driving his Mercedes G Wagon and witnessed a throng of fans huddled outside waiting to get a glimpse of the superstar. The Second City Saint’s face immediately lit up, seeing his fans welcome him with CM Punk chants.
He acknowledged the fans with a thumbs up and, a moment later, signed a couple of autographs before leaving the venue. CM Punk’s WWE return has thoroughly taken over the wrestling community. His return video alone has garnered over 11 million views on the official WWE X handle. It will be interesting to see what the company has in store for the Straight Edge Superstar.
