Gunther is having a dominating run as the intercontinental champion. The Ring General has defended the Intercontinental Championship on several occasions since his win in June 2022. Gunther had defeated Ricochet on the June 10th edition of SmackDown.

Since then, Gunther has defended the title against Ricochet, Sheamus, and Rey Mysterio. His rivalry against Sheamus was an intense one, which showed Sheamus’ strong desire to capture the Intercontinental Championship. Their match at the Clash at the Castle got wide acclaim, with Dave Meltzer giving it five stars.

Gunther has been carrying the Intercontinental Championship for 216 days now, and on this Friday he will defend it against Braun Strowman. The Ring General was challenged by Strowman on the December 30th edition of SmackDown. While the Ring General is aided by his Imperium colleagues, Strowman is aided by Ricochet as well. The two seem to have formed an alliance and have had each other’s back.

During a recent appearance on WWE’s The Bump, Braun Strowman showered praise on The Ring General. He praised Gunther for his incredible transformation and said that The Ring General certainly knows how to deal with his opponents.

“He’s done an unbelievable transformation with his body, I mean, they call him The Ring General for a reason. He knows his way around the ring. He damn near dislocated my shoulder the other week on SmackDown.”

Braun Strowman has been an Intercontinental Champion once in his career. The Monster of all Monsters won the Championship for the first time in 2020, when he defeated Shinsuke Nakamura on an edition of SmackDown.

Strowman’s reign lasted for only 36 days, and he lost it to Sami Zayn. Since then, Strowman hasn’t won the title again. The Monster of All Monsters has his eyes set on winning the championship for the second time. This will be the first time that the former Universal Champion will fight for a championship after his return to WWE.

During a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News, Gunther heaped praise on Braun Strowman. The Ring General stated that facing Strowman is a completely new challenge for him. He said that, up until now, he used to be the big guy in the ring, but the situation is different now. Gunther then went on to praise Strowman, saying that, considering Strowman’s size and weight, he is very agile and moves very well in the ring. He stated that he was eagerly looking forward to the encounter.

“That’s a completely new challenge for me. I’m used to 99.9% of all the matches I’ve had in my career, I was the bigger guy or I wrestled someone that was, like, evenly sized….. I think Braun is an excellent talent. For his size and his weight, he moves very well. He’s very agile. So, I’m excited for that.”

About a month ago, there had been speculation that The Ring General would face Brock Lesnar at the grandest stage of all. While there is no confirmation as of yet, watching the two wrestlers compete will undoubtedly be on people’s bucket lists. Fans believe that the encounter between the two has the potential to be a five-star bout.
