“When they put it on me, the Intercontinental Title didn’t mean anything”- The Godfather recalls his 42 day short stint with the title
The Godfather surrounded by girls
Charles Wright who is better known as The Godfather was a notable name during the 90s and 2000s. He is a former 1-time WWE Intercontinental Champion which only lasted for 42 days over him. He made his first appearance with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) on May 28, 1991 at a taping in Arizona. Throughout his WWE career The Godfather portrayed many characters by the likes of Papa Shango, Mustafa and the most prominent among them was The Godfather one. He was also a part of the faction known as The Nation of Domination but that ended in October of 98’.
Charles fortunes changed when he brought up his “The Godfather” gimmick which basically had the concept of being surrounded by girls from strip clubs. The character quickly became highly popular with the fans all around which probably brought more glory to him in form of the prestigious International Championship which he won after defeating Goldust in an episode of Raw is War dated April 12, 1999.
The Godfather was recently a guest on “The A2theK Wrestling Show” where he highlighted the brief run he had with the Intercontinental Title. He said that the prestigious championship meant nothing when he holded it even for a very short period. He thought his Godfather character didn’t enhanced any value to the title.
“When they put it on me, the Intercontinental Title didn’t mean anything,” Godfather said. “Because I had the girls and this became something that the girls would carry, because the show was bigger than the Intercontinental Championship if that makes any sense. And so, I think they just put it on me just so later on when they put me in the Hall of Fame, they had something on there.”
Gunther is the Current Intercontinental Champion
The Ring General Gunther won the Intercontinental Championship from Ricochet three weeks ago on Smackdown following a brutal in-ring display. Now, it actually seems like the workhorse title of WWE is finally in the right hands. Following his incredible transformation, Gunther is currently in the shape of his career and with the Interview Title around his waist, he can do wonders this title has been deprived of lately.
The Intercontinental Championship have been held by over a dozen of WWE Hall of Famers and legends like Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, The Honky Tonk Man, Randy Orton, Edge just to name a few of them. As per going by the mordern era standards, The Miz is considered to be as one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time.
