The Rock made his WWE debut at Survivor Series 1996. But in his debut, he came up as Rocky Maivia. This was a tribute to his father’s wrestling name, Rocky Johnson, and his grandfather, Peter Maivia. His father helped him a lot in availing his wrestling skills.

DJ wanted himself to be called something else by the wrestling fans. But Vince McMahon rejected his request asking him to pay homage to his lineage. This led to the megastar being called ‘Rocky Maivia’ for some time.

This was until McMahon realized that fans were not able to resonate with Rocky Maivia. After DJ became a heel, he called himself the Rock, a name given by the late great Pat Patterson. The Rock then started getting the fame he deserved. Fans also started loving the megastar and his wrestling style.
