WWE seemingly drops a subtle reference of CM Punk at Fastlane

Has WWE found a way to tease the fans like they’ve done over the past week or so? Seemingly, the promotion has bombed yet another CM Punk reference on the show. In last night’s main event of Fastlane, Seth Rollins edged out Shinsuke Nakamura in a grueling Last Man Standing match. The Visionary had to dig deep to retain his World Heavyweight Championship.

But, right before the live visuals were taken off-air, Corey Graves said during the commentary, “Riding on the edge of a lightning bolt,” just when Seth Rollins was in the frame. Surprisingly, CM Punk posted the exact same lines on his Instagram story a few months ago, with his WrestleMania 29 entrance alongside Paul Heyman in the background.

WWE has been constantly dropping subtle hints of CM Punk on the programming. This has been happening both on Monday Night Raw and SmackDown. Well, this couldn’t be a coincidence again and again. CM Punk’s WWE return rumors have picked up in a big way ever since Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported about it.

Dave Meltzer said that the Second City Saint has been in talks with the Stamford-based promotion for a potential agreement. As a result, the rumors of his homecoming have suddenly picked up steam. Multiple reports are following up on the former AEW superstar’s latest stance.

However, that isn’t going to be easy, as he has to mend some fences. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported that the foremost name with whom Punk has to resolve the issues is Roman Reigns. The latter is the face of the company at present, and unless he’s satisfied with the former AEW superstar coming in, it simply wouldn’t happen.

Not only that, CM Punk has bad blood with Seth Rollins as well. This year, The Visionary went on a tirade over Phil Brooks during an interview and advised him to stay away from WWE. Rollins even called him a “cancer” for the locker room.

Did Corey Graves actually tease CM Punk on SmackDown this week?

Before getting to Fastlane, Corey Graves discerningly pulled out a CM Punk tease on SmackDown as well. While advertising Seth Rollins’ match against Shinsuke Nakamura, the commentator quoted, “The greatest trick The Devil ever pulled was making the world believe he never existed.”

For those who caught it the first time, the Second City Saint used the exact wording during his notorious ROH promo just when he was about to join WWE. That said, the assumed CM Punk reference spread like wildfire on social media. So much so that it even popped up on Graves’ personal timeline, and he had to clear his side.

He simply wrote, “You guys should really see The Usual Suspects.” The mentioned 1995 movie is famous for producing that aforementioned dialogue, and Corey Graves indirectly hinted that he wasn’t referring to Punk but the Bryan Singer-directed film.
