WWE to reportedly present two Premium Live Events in May 2023, “King and Queen Of The Ring” to be one of them

Xavier Woods and Zelina Vega King and Queen

At Crown Jewel 2021, WWE had the last “King of the Ring” tournament in Saudi Arabia. The “Queen’s Crown” tournament was introduced in the lead-up to the event as well. Xavier Woods was crowned as the King of the Ring, with Zelina Vega winning the first-ever Queen’s Crown. However, apart from carrying it wherever they went, both wrestlers didn’t get any legitimate opportunities after winning the crown. This year, fans can expect Triple H to restore the tournament’s prestige.

Over the course of their history, WWE has been producing PPVs and PLEs on a monthly basis, with some exceptions. The tradition has continued this year, with the exception of March, which has no upcoming PLE prior to WrestleMania 39. However, two PLEs are reported to take place following WrestleMania this year in the month of May.

As reported by Brandon Thurston from Wrestlenomics in a Patreon-exclusive video, WWE is set to run two PLEs in May 2023. The first PLE would be “Backlash,” which will reportedly take place on May 6, 2023. Backlash was started back in 1999; however, WWE has been calling it “WrestleMania Backlash” in recent years. If the report is to be believed, the WrestleMania branding will be abolished from the event’s name this year under Triple Hs regime.

The second event would be “King and Queen of the Ring,” which will reportedly be taking place on May 27, 2023. WWE produced the last PPV named King of the Ring back in 2002. However, the tournament has been used infrequently as part of special events since 2002 onwards.

King of the Ring
Steve Austin and Booker T after winning the King of the Ring tournament

King of the Ring tournament has been held by WWE since 1985. The tournament was originally created to showcase the company’s rising stars and to provide an opportunity for wrestlers to prove themselves in a competitive setting. In the year 1985, The inaugural King of the Ring tournament was held and was won by Don Muraco.

Over the years, King of the Ring victory has elevated many of WWE’s top stars, including Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Triple H, Edge, and Brock Lesnar. The tournament has also been the site of several memorable moments in WWE history. Such as Austin’s famous “Austin 3:16” promo in 1996 and the Golden run of Booker T after being crowned, eventually becoming World champion.

However, the tournament in recent years has been used more as a storyline device rather than a legitimate opportunity. Nonetheless, the WWE King of the Ring remains an important part of the company’s history and legacy with many fans looking back on the tournament as a defining moment in the careers of some of WWE’s biggest stars.
