WWE Summerslam rivalries: Finn Balor and Bray Wyatt

WWE Summerslam rivalries: Finn Balor and Bray Wyatt

Balor and Wyatt

WWE Summerslam has delivered some of the most iconic matches in the history of WWE. While some matches have been a part of popular feuds, others have been one-off matches. But one some rare occasions, WWE has delivered a prolonged feud at Summerslam.

One such feud involved The Fiend Bray Wyatt and Finn Balor. The two Superstars have battled at Summerslam on two occasions. Prior to Bray Wyatt’s release from the company, the WWE Universe had been advocating for another battle between them, completing the trilogy.

In terms of the storyline, WWE had a set the stage for a big match. On the first instance, Bray Wyat had faced Balor’s alter-ego The Demon King. The next time they collided at Summerslam, Balor faced The Fiend Bray Wyatt, who was debuting on WWE TV.

The stage was completely set for completing the trilogy – with Wyatt’s alter-ego, The Fiend, facing off against Finn Balor’s alter-ego, The Demon King. But Wyatt’s release means that the match isn’t possible, at least, in the near future.

The feud that led to the first Summerslam encounter between Balor and Wyatt was kicked off during an episode of Raw, when Wyatt appeared on the titantron and announced that he enjoyed Balor’s pain. He was Balor’s worst nightmare. The feud deepened further when Wyatt costed Balor his match against Elias.

But Balor too wasn’t taking all this quietly, even he attacked Wyatt while he was cutting an in-ring promo. But before they could fight at WWE Summerslam, Raw General Manager announced their match for the Red-brand. Wyatt emerged victorious and even poured a blood-like substance on Balor after the match.

Finn Balor announced that his alter-ego, Demon King, will be coming out at Summerslam. As expected, Wyatt couldn’t match the dominance of Demon King and was handed a loss after he was hit by a Coup De Grace. But this wasn’t the end of their feud as a rematch was set for No Mercy.

This match has been etched into the memory of the WWE Universe, because it marked the TV debut of Bray Wyatt’s iconic alter-ego “The Fiend”. Wyatt had been delivering the Firefly Fun House segments but was yet to appear inside the ring.

When Finn Balor had appeared as a wild card guest on an episode of Raw, Wyatt appeared as The Fiend and attacked Balor, setting up the match for Summerslam. Balor challenged him for the match, but Wyatt’s way of acceptance made the match even more exciting. He mentioned that Wyatt was a fan of Balor but “The Fiend” wasn’t. Hence, The Fiend accepted Balor’s Summerslam challenge.

Right from the entrance it was clear that WWE was about to deliver something iconic. The Fiend dominated throughout the match and applied the Mandible Claw for the win. Justifiably, this rivalry is considered to be one of the most iconic rivalries in the history of Summerslam.
