Throwback: Two of the biggest WWE faces John Cena and Rey Mysterio collide
Mysterio and Cena
John Cena and Rey Mysterio are two of the biggest babyfaces to ever step inside the WWE ring. While Mysterio has never turned Heel in the entirety of his WWE career, Cena has been a face for a major part of his time on WWE, barring a couple of initial years. The two Superstars have often teamed up but the Leader of Cenation collided against the Master of 619 nearly two decades ago during a Smackdown episode.
The two Superstars delivered a brutal nearly 6-minute long bout. While Cena clearly had the advantage of size, it turned out to be a battle of equals, as Mysterio used his small size and agility to his advantage. In the initial stages of the match, Mysterio tried to run around the ringside to break Cena’s momentum but was taken down by a series of clotheslines.
John Cena made a couple of pinfall attempts but Mysterio managed to kick out every time. The Master of 619 soon gained some momentum with some high risk manoeuvres, a hurricanrana and a 619. Mysterio looked to finish things off with a Splash, but Cena managed to deliver an Attitude Adjustment for the win.
But as soon as the match got over, Smackdown’s then-general manager Paul Heyman walked out with the Team Lesnar for Survivor Series – which included the then-WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and the then United States Champion Big Show among others. Heyman mockingly applauded Cena and offered him the final spot on Team Lesnar.
But Cena said that no one tells him what to do. But as he spoke, he was taken down by A-Train in a sneak attack. Soon Team Lesnar surrounded Cena and attacked him. The Beast Incarnate took Cena down with a steel chair and posed in the ring as Cena was down.
John Cena has shifted his focus on his Hollywood career
After dominating the WWE roster for over a decade, John Cena shifted his focus on his Hollywood career. In fact, 2021 was a landmark year for him as he was seen big Hollywood franchisees – Fast & Furious and The Suicide Squad. But he also returned to WWE this year.
Cena returned at WWE Money in the Bank and challenged Universal Champion Roman Reigns as Summerslam. After a brutal clash, Reigns managed to retain his title against Cena. While we may not see more of him in the WWE ring, this year, but Cena has promised to return soon.
