Several teams were linked to LeBron James when he decided to part ways with the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2025-26 campaign. Reports said more than 10 teams contacted his camp and expressed interest in signing him as a free agent.
After leaving the Lakers, James said he would take his time choosing his next team, prioritizing his happiness. In the end, his decision came down to five teams: : the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves.
However, reports said even the New York Knicks inquired about James’ future. If not for their championship run this year, the King would likely be donning the Knicks jersey for the 2026-27 campaign.
During the media day press conference, James revealed that he wanted to play for the Knicks.
I had visions of definitely playing in the Garden, finishing my career in the Garden. One of the best places I’ve ever played. I think it’s the No. 1 arena in the world, as far as for a basketball player. But after they beat San Antonio, I was like I couldn’t do it.

The Sixers…
The Knicks ended their 53-year-long wait after beating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals last season. It was a historic run as Jalen Brunson led them to the pinnacle of the sport.
James’ agent Rich Paul also revealed that the Knicks contacted him during the playoffs, and James was tempted to play at Madison Square Garden. However, after winning the championship, James decided to give up on the idea of playing for the Knicks.
LeBron James knew media scrutiny would be coming his way
LeBron James was drafted straight out of high school in 2003. The hype and attention around him were off the charts even before he stepped onto the NBA court.
The four-time champion may be one of the greatest players of all time, but he is one of the most criticized stars as well. He continues to be one of the most scrutinized players in the league even at this stage of his career.
While speaking to ESPN insider Dave McMenamin, James cited anticipated media backlash over joining a title team as one of the main reasons for not joining the Knicks.
After they beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it. Y’all wouldn’t have let me lay that down, at all. But much respect to the Knicks. I’m happy where I’m at.

If James had signed with the Knicks after they lifted the title, he would certainly have faced criticism for choosing a championship team over others interested in him.
In the end, the 41-year-old decided to join the 76ers on a two-year deal. While he did receive some criticism for his latest move, it is nothing compared to the criticism he would receive for joining the reigning champions.
LeBron James is excited to play in Philly
LeBron James has committed his next two years to Philly. While he may not be the player he once was, he has shown that he can still play an important role in a championship-contending team after his performances last season.

During his press conference, he spoke about his excitement to play in an elite sports town like Philadelphia.
I’m super excited to get in front of these fans. They know sports, they know ball. And if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing, they’re gonna let you hear it, and I’m excited about that. It’s a sport town. I am just excited to be a part of this, be a part of the feeling, be a part of the vibe and go out and play for something that is more than myself.
