Shedeur Sanders‘ future with the Cleveland Browns remains uncertain. Talks on trading Sanders after just one year are taking place within the Browns’ facility.

Deshaun Watson’s presence is slowly pushing Sanders out of Cleveland. Watson returned after nearly eighteen months sidelined due to multiple Achilles injuries.

Per multiple reports, Watson and Sanders were neck and neck during the recently concluded OTAs. Nathan Zegura, the Browns color analyst on the Ross Tucker Podcast, said:

Shedeur [Sanders] has had a very nice camp. He has progressed SO much in terms of his pre and post snap progression…

The Browns’ quarterbacks coach, Mike Bajakian, was pleasantly surprised by Sanders’ progress. However, he also asked to pump the brakes. No one is a clear winner right now. The OTAs aren’t an adequate system for measuring which quarterback is better. Waiting for the training camp results is the best option.

The beauty of what training camp will give you that OTAs and minicamp haven’t given you is more live bullets, frankly. It’s a little bit easier to make a faster evaluation when you have a defensive line that’s coming at you full speed, when you really have to react to the full-speed aspect of the game.

For the time being, Sanders stands an equal shot at winning the quarterback battle. However, if Watson prevails, then Sanders could be looking at donning a different jersey when the new season begins.

Shedeur Sanders can have a fresh start

Being traded to another organization can go both ways for Sanders—either he becomes a regular in the league or transitions into a perennial backup/journeyman. Nevertheless, it will be a fresh start for the 24-year-old.

Sanders has endured a lot even before being drafted to the NFL. Despite receiving a first-round grade, he fell to day three of the draft before the Browns selected him in the fifth round, two rounds after taking Dillon Gabriel.

Sanders failed to break into the top two in the Browns QB ladder. He had to wait until the midway point of his rookie year to get a chance to show his skills. The Browns’ regime change seemed like a turning point in his career, but with all the recent trade chatter, fans may have to get used to seeing him in a different uniform.

And it could prove a welcoming change depending on where he ends up. He can learn a lot from coaches like Kyle Shanahan or Kevin O’Connell.

Sanders could experience success similar to Sam Darnold

Some players become successful right out of the gate, while a few take years to settle. Patrick Mahomes won three Super Bowls before turning 30, while Matthew Stafford waited 13 years to win a ring. Sam Darnold, a first-round draft pick, bounced around from one team to another before finally finding his big break with the Seahawks.

The point is, Sanders shouldn’t count himself out if the Browns trade him to a different team. He should embrace the challenge and give his best.

By trading Sanders, the Browns will have one less quarterback on the team. Aside from Watson and Gabriel, the AFC North franchise also has former Arkansas signal-caller Taylen Green on the roster. Green is a dual-threat monster and is highly regarded. If Sanders finds a new team, then they can focus on developing just two young QBs.

Shedeur Sanders will escape the Browns earlier than most

Before the draft, Shedeur’s father and college coach, Deion Sanders, had made it clear that he didn’t want his son to play for certain teams. The Browns are one of those teams. Cleveland has a poor history of developing quarterbacks. They have shuffled through 25+ quarterbacks since the turn of the century. If Sanders is traded, then Coach Prime will likely breathe a sigh of relief.
