San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams made it clear that his contract, which ends after the 2027 season, will likely be the last contract of his NFL career. Williams plans to retire as a Niner.

Williams finalized a three-year, $82.66 million contract extension with the Niners ahead of the 2025 season. He earned a Pro Bowl call-up in the first year of the contract. As for the final two, Williams intends to honor the agreement.

I wouldn’t say it changed my urgency, but it does change my mind frame a little bit. Like, instead of just coming to work, I actually try to soak it in. I just don’t know. Obviously, you know, it could be my last two years. It’s probably the plan.

Trent Williams said on the first day of the 49ers’ spring training camp

The 49ers acquired Williams in a trade in 2020. Since then, he has played 84 games for the NFC West franchise. He has earned multiple Pro Bowl honors, a conference title, and a trip to the Super Bowl.

Despite turning 38, Trent Williams is considered one of the premier left tackles in the NFL. On the 2024 NFL Top 100 Players list, his peers ranked him as the seventh-best player in the league.

The Niners have several young players waiting for their chance to fill Williams’ shoes in the future. Players like Carver Willis, Enrique Cruz and Connor Colby are still raw, but they are learning from one of the best tackles in the league.

Williams began his career with the Washington Commanders. The NFC East club drafted the Oklahoma graduate fourth overall in 2010. He played 120 games for them.

The Niners finished third in their division in 2025. It was a small miracle, given the number of injuries the roster had. Among them was All-Pro edge Nick Bosa, who suffered an ACL injury early in the season.

Bosa watched his teammates survive the regular season and squeeze into the playoffs through the wildcard route. The Niners’ fairy tale run eventually ended at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round.

Nearly eight months since being removed from his injury, Bosa is reportedly doing well, much to the surprise and delight of Trent Williams.

I see him every day. I couldn’t even tell he had an injury or he came back from anything. Most people with a knee injury that catastrophic, you come back, you can see something. You can see it in the atrophy in the muscle and the leg. You can see something.

Williams further added that Bosa looks better than before his injury.

That’s just a commendment to him and how hard he works. A guy that’s successful with that much, his motor is still running as high as it [does]; I think it’s just a testament to his character.

Williams said (H/T ESPN)

Bosa recently found himself engulfed in controversy after posting on Twitter for the first time in four years, celebrating Ryan Clark’s dismissal from ESPN. Bosa, a former second overall pick, has five Pro Bowl appearances, one All-Pro, a Defensive Rookie of the Year award, and one DPOY honor.
