Trash-talking is undoubtedly the most interesting aspect of combat sports. Apart from the actual fight, the pre-fight verbal combat between the two fighters stirs more attention. UFC is notorious for letting the fighters trash-talk each other verbally to great extents before the two get into the octagon to fight it out physically. As a fruit of that, the UFC has given the world of combat sports some of the greatest showmen ever.
Fighters that trash talk are most enjoyed when they back their talk with actual fighting skills inside the octagon. There have been several moments when UFC fighters took it too far with their trash-talking by crossing the line. Instances like that make the fans and viewers want to root for the underdog, who, in this case, are the fighters at the receiving end of the verbal abuse. Read further to see some of the most memorable moments trash-talking fighters got owned inside the octagon.
#5 Chael Sonnen’s trash-talking goes wrong against Anderson Silva
Chael Sonnen is arguably the greatest trash talker and most entertaining fighter to watch pre-fights. Chael sold fights, unlike any other fighters. He was the first to utilize the trash-talking method to boost PPV sales.
Chael Sonnen called out then-champion Anderson Silva for a rematch after he lost to him the first time via submission. Chael won four rounds in the first fight but could not get the job done.
The promotions to the rematch were wild, as Sonnen wouldn’t stop trash-talking and roasting Silva. On the other hand, Silva did not lose his composure, kept it to himself and later ended up knocking out Sonnen in the second round.
#4 Nate Diaz shushes Conor McGregor at UFC 196
Oh boy, was this beautiful to watch (obviously not to Conor McGregor fans)! This was one of the most entertaining matchups in the history of UFC. It just couldn’t get better. Two of the most interesting fighters to watch crossed over to give us one of the most intense series of fights.
The fight pushed Nate Diaz to superstardom. 2016 was a great time to be an MMA fan. Diaz took the fight on short-notice and did something no one expected him to do.
There’s a reason Conor is called “The Notorious One,” and he sure did live up to it. Gruesome trash-talking, though Nate isn’t one to shy away from verbal abuse. When everyone’s money was riding on McGregor, Nate Diaz showed up with an absolutely dominating display of fighting as he tapped out the trash-talker in the second round.
#3 Georges St-Pierre shows Michael Bisping levels
This was the return of the welterweight GOAT Georges St-Pierre from retirement. GSP decided to fight the world’s middleweight champion, Michael Bisping. This matchup was also one of the best in the history. Some felt GSP only came to the UFC to receive trash talk from his opponent.
This fight showed us why GSP was levels above any fighter he went up against. Bisping is easily the most annoying fighter at press conferences. His British trash-talking style got under people’s skin and crumbled them in the octagon, but not GSP.
St-Pierre stayed humble throughout all the promotion, and his fighting did the talking inside the octagon. He comfortably won the first round. However, Bisping troubled him in the second round. GSP made the adjustments and submitted Bisping to win the UFC middleweight championship.
#2 Rose Namajunas thugs out on Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Rose Namajunas is a scary fighter to face in the octagon but remains one of the calmest and most introverted people outside the ring. Namajunas was matched up against Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a title bout. This also remains one of the fiercest trash talks in the UFC featuring female fighters.
It was Namajunas’ second attempt at a UFC title. Rose Namajunas has talked about her mental struggles in the past. However, Joanna tried to have a mental advantage with her trash talks.
Joanna was the strawweight champion and was one of the most intimidating people to face in a fight. Despite Joanna’s mind games and verbal abuse, Thug Rose showed how it’s done inside the octagon in 2018 to become the new strawweight champion. Joanna was so intimidating that she almost made Namajunas quit before the fight.
#1 Khabib Nurmagomedov becomes the king of the lightweight division beating Conor McGregor
This is no doubt the greatest fight in UFC’s history. This matchup checked out all the boxes you would want in a UFC fight. This had everything from great fighting, drama, trash talk, and glory.
Conor McGregor came back after a break to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov. Things have never gone this wild in any other fight. Conor was caught throwing chairs on Khabib’s bus to disrespect his father and religion.
Kudos to Khabib for maintaining his calm through all the abuse and giving back to Conor in the octagon. While McGregor crossed lines abusing Khabib and his team, the undefeated champion said to the world that he would choke out Conor, and he sure was a man of his word. McGregor has not looked the same since.
