In his sophomore year in the league, Caleb Williams transformed himself from an inexperienced rookie to a quarterback taking the Chicago Bears to their first playoffs in five seasons. He also scripted a sensational win over arch-rivals Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, the first playoff win for Chicago in about 15 years.

He was a champion presence on the field, and EA Sports has rightfully awarded him the honor of gracing the cover of Madden NFL 2027. Apart from his throws and numbers, Williams has also carved a reputation for himself with his colored nails and, most importantly, the details on them. It was not at all shocking when the cover was revealed that the quarterback decided to pay tribute to one of the finest sportsmen who has represented the Windy City, Michael Jordan.

EA Sports originally planned to recreate Williams’ most iconic game moment of the year. Yes, the jump pass that sealed a stunning comeback against the Packers in the wild-card round. However, the Bears quarterback requested a bit of sparkle in the picture with the Chicago skyline in the background.

This design directly honors Michael Jordan’s legendary 1985 Air Jordan poster, which captured His Airness midair against a twilight cityscape. By mirroring the iconic Jumpman pose, Williams seamlessly linked Chicago’s bright football future with its golden basketball past. Jordan brought six championships to the Windy City with the Chicago Bulls between 1991 and 1998.

Speaking of the cover, the Bears quarterback said he hopes to win championships for the city like Jordan did. He also added that beyond that, it was also about keeping the memories fresh. Williams said Thursday evening at the EA Sports season-opening event at Chicago’s Navy Pier:

That’s the position I want to be in, but I also wanted to pay respect to MJ. It was more of a respect thing. Bringing retro back, not letting people forget that and doing it on my side of the world of football. Paying respect to that and him and what he was able to do in Chicago. Just honestly wanted to bring that energy, that vibe back.

Williams is set to have his first meeting with Michael Jordan soon, pending a scheduling conflict.

Caleb Williams is prepared to break the Madden Curse and the pressure of being a QB1 in Chicago

Caleb Williams is not running away from the spotlight; he is sprinting right toward it. As the face of the new Madden NFL video game with a 90 rating, the Chicago Bears quarterback faces a unique challenge known as the Madden Curse.

For years, football fans have noticed a worrying trend: NFL stars who appear on the game’s cover often suffer terrible luck the next season. This curse usually takes the form of sudden, devastating injuries or an unexpected, dramatic drop in a player’s performance.

It has haunted legends for decades, making fans terrified to see their favorite player on the cover. When a fan recently asked Williams if he could break this infamous jinx, the quarterback pointed to his face and confidently replied, “Damn right.”

The bold attitude is exactly what Williams needs heading into his third year with the Bears. Expectations are sky-high after he led Chicago to an incredible 11-win season and their first playoff victory in 15 years. Fortunately, Williams is no stranger to intense pressure. Williams told ESPN:

I understood that I was going to a big market. I grew up in D.C., big market. I went to L.A., second- or first-biggest market, and then now I’m here at second- or third-biggest market. And so I’ve been kind of groomed for it, but also growing up and working out and grinding and things like that.

Williams added that heavy pressure and immense celebrity status simply come with the territory of being a true QB1.
