The NASCAR Community is still not over the heartbreak of losing Kyle Busch two weeks ago. He passed away at the age of 41, due to severe pneumonia and sepsis. The whole community came together to pay their respect to the legend ahead of the Coca Cola 600 with a special event and continues to do so, with other unique gestures.
Richard Childress, the owner of RCR who already went through a similar challenging moment when Dale Eranhardt Sr. died in the 2001 Daytona 500 crash, sat down with the media for the first time to talk about the two times champion at Michigan. He had some solid advices for the sport on how the Busch legacy needs to be respected.
The racer turned team owner talked about the legacy left behind by the champions drivers. He called that late racer one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen, as he one of the few to win championships in all-three national series. Kyle Busch went from a drivers overlooked by many, including Richard Childress once to absolute legend.
Kyle will go down in history as one of the greatest race drivers that’s ever been. His legacy is that he was a man that a lot of people thought he was tough to deal with, and that he wouldn’t last long.
Richard Childress said ahead of Michigan race.
With 234 wins to his name for the national series, and Kyle Busch Motorsports that developed around 15 top drivers in the current garage makes him one of the key figures in the sport history. That’s why instead of waiting for three more years, Childress wants NASCAR to induct the late racer into the Hall of Fame as part of class of 2027.
He is a man that loves his sport. He loved it so much he wanted to see his family carry on in it. To see the enjoyment in Kyle’s eyes watching his son race was just unbelievable… He’ll be in the Hall of Fame. I’d like to see him put in right away.
Richard Childress added via ESPN.
Austin Hill set to replace Kyle Busch for the remaining races of 2026
For the last two races since the veteran’s death, Austin Hill has been driving for the No:8 team now the No:33, after the team decided to reserve the number for Brexton Busch, for the team. Childress has now confirmed that it will remain the same till the end of the season, as they don’t want to make things more complicated for the crew by fielding cars for multiple drivers.

Right now we’re looking at the rest of the season…We don’t want to put a burden back on everybody trying to go from one driver to the other.
Richard Childress said.
This will give Hill the opportunity to drive in more Cup races he has ever driven combined in his whole career. In his career he has made a combined 17 starts, with only a top-10 finish to boast about. Four of those starts came in the 2026 season and none of the events produced any significant results.
Kevin Harvick became the NASCAR legend he is today by taking advantage of the opportunity that opened following Dale Sr.’s death. Hill have the opportunity do something similar, as he will have the No:33 seat for the 22 upcoming races. While he isn’t as talented as Harvick, he might be able to land a seat for a lower division team with a strong run.
