LaMelo Ball was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets as the number three pick in the 2020 NBA draft. While he has been promising and was even named as an All-Star in 2022, he was expected to be the face of the franchise and lead them for several years to come.
Unfortunately, the Hornets continue to be in a playoff drought, as it has been 10 years since they last made it to the playoffs. After missing the playoffs once again this year, it looks like the Hornets are ready to move on from the 24-year-old star.
NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the Hornets are actively engaged in trade discussions regarding Ball.
Minnesota Timberwolves have expressed a strong desire to acquire Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball, league sources tell me. Hornets only listening to offers at the moment.

LaMelo Ball is coming off his lowest scoring season since his rookie year. In his sixth season in the NBA, he averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists in 72 appearances.
The Hornets did show signs of improvement in the second half of the season as they ended up finishing at ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 44-38 record. They beat the Miami Heat in the first game of the Play-In Tournament before losing to the Orlando Magic in the final match of their campaign.
Ball was involved in a car crash earlier this year but made it out unharmed. He faced criticism for his dirty play against the Heat in the Play-In Tournament and for his poor showing in a crucial match against the Magic.
However, it looks like the Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in signing the point guard. With Donte DiVincenzo possibly ruled out for the entire 2026-27 campaign, they may be looking at Ball as their primary ball handler next season.
Fans react to Minnesota Timberwolves’ interest in LaMelo Ball
The Hornets entertaining offers for LaMelo Ball may not be a surprise to many. While he is a talented and crafty player, he is inconsistent with his form, and the Hornets have shown that they have other players they can count on heading forward.
Reports of the Wolves’ interest in acquiring Ball generated a lot of buzz across social media.
This is puzzling because that team had a breakout year last season why break it up?

Ant & LaMelo on the same team is the most chaotic good thing that could happen to the NBA 😂

You’re not serious about winning if you are trading for LaMelo

What are they going to offer? The hornets just literally finally got an ounce of success? If I’m not getting Jaden McDaniel then why break up the hornets

Fans were skeptical of LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards playing off each other in Minnesota. It will be an interesting backcourt for sure. Talks surrounding Ball have picked up steam with the Hornets fielding aggressive offers.
Minnesota Timberwolves have been active in the offseason already
After making it to the Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025, the Wolves would have been hopeful of taking the next step this year. While they were impressive in the first round against the Denver Nuggets, they struggled against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semifinals as they were eliminated in six games.
The Wolves are aware that they may be running out of time with Anthony Edwards. Their franchise player has been great, but the Wolves’ front office has made some poor decisions in surrounding him with the right players. They let Karl-Anthony Towns go as they prioritized Rudy Gobert ahead of him. Towns went on to win a championship with the New York Knicks this year.

The Wolves have been active in the offseason already. They traded away Julius Randle as they cleared cap space to sign Ayo Dosunmu and assign a starting role for Naz Reid.
It looks like they are still looking to add some more talent to the squad, as they are now linked to LaMelo Ball. It remains to be seen what more the Wolves will do in the offseason as they look to challenge in the West next season.
