Sir Nick Faldo has caught some flak from golf fans on social media. On Friday, the 6-time major champion claimed he is a “big fan” of Bryson DeChambeau, a day after the LIV Golf star took a subtle dig at him for his “strategy” comment.

DeChambeau, the Crusher GC captain, has struggled in the majors this year. He entered the field on Thursday at the Royal Birkdale on the back of 3 straight missed cuts at the majors.

This setback was something that had never happened before with DeChambeau. So the pressure was on him to deliver on Thursday.

Before the event on Tuesday, Sir Nick Faldo had some tough words for the American. While speaking on Sky Sports, the former World No.1 referred to an early comment of DeChambeau and expressed that he had “zero clue” about strategy.

I’d say it to his face, he has zero clue of strategy.

DeChambeau carded an opening round score of 67 with 5 birdies and 2 bogeys. With his 3-under par score, the 2-time U.S. Open champion ended the day T4, 2 shots behind leader Jackson Suber.

While the golfer refused to take part in any media duties, print or TV, he had agreed to speak with an R&A official. Though he did not name Faldo, he claimed that he felt good about his strategy on Thursday.

I feel like I did a really good job today of being incredibly strategic and focused super hard on placing it in the right places.

On Friday, Faldo responded to this comment. In a video shared on his social media account, the 68-year-old mentioned that he was a “big fan” of DeChambeau and expressed that if he kept playing strategically, he could become the Champion Golfer of the Year.

I’m a big fan of Bryson, let’s get that out. We text each other throughout the season. I have respect for him and his game. … Over the last couple of years, he hasn’t shown much strategy on a links golf course, and I believe I know a little bit about strategy. … I do wish him all the best. If he keeps it going and keeps playing well, maybe he’ll be right there on Sunday to be the Champion Golfer of the Year.

Fans on X, though, were not so keen to let it slide. Many attacked the ex-CBS analyst for his words and called him out. One user wrote, “moving the goalposts” while reacting to it.

Check out that and some other reactions below:

Faldo does know a thing or two about the Open Championship. He is one of the 19 golfers to win this event 3 or more times, having done it thrice in 1987, 1990 and 1992.

Sir Nick Faldo was not the only man who attacked Bryson DeChambeau before The Open

The way Bryson DeChambeau has performed in the majors this year, he has attracted a lot of criticism. On Tuesday, Sir Nick Faldo was not the only one who commented on the LIV golfer before the Open.

At Live From The Open, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee once again criticized DeChambeau. The veteran claimed that he went from batting Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler to trying to outdo every YouTube golfer.

It’s almost like he went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat. It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game instead of out play everybody in the game of golf.

DeChambeau has had success this year. Before the Masters Tournament, he won back-to-back events on the LIV Golf circuit through playoff wins. He ended the day at T5, 3 shots behind the leader Lucas Herbert, after he was handed a 2-shot penalty for improving his lie on the 5th hole in the second round.
