Luka Doncic is coming off one of his best individual campaigns since entering the NBA in 2018. He won the scoring title and finished in fourth place in the MVP race last season.
Meanwhile, Klay Thompson had a difficult 2025-26 campaign. For the first time since his rookie season, Thompson was seen as a role player coming off the bench. It did not matter much in the end, as the Dallas Mavericks missed the playoffs once again, finishing 12th in the Western Conference standings.
However, it looks like Thompson may be bought out by the Mavs and could reunite with Doncic in Los Angeles with the Lakers. Christian Clark of The Athletic has confirmed that the Mavs have been looking to trade the four-time champion as they look to build a squad around Cooper Flagg.
My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer.

Klay Thompson rejected a bigger contract from the Lakers when he became a free agent in 2024. The former Golden State Warriors star ended up signing for the Mavs as he wanted to play alongside Doncic.
Unfortunately, their partnership did not last long as the Slovenian guard was traded away to the Lakers in a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline last year. Thompson expressed interest in ending his career with the Warriors, but it is expected that he would love to play for the Lakers before he retires, as he grew up as a fan of the franchise during his childhood days.
Klay Thompson will have another opportunity to play alongside Luka Doncic
The Mavs have finally moved on from their unexpected and surprising trade of Luka Doncic. The franchise has been all over the place since his departure, while Doncic continues to get better.

After joining the Lakers last year, Doncic has been the focal point of the team as even LeBron James took a backseat in the last one and a half seasons. Doncic led the Lakers to a fourth-place finish in the standings as he averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists in 64 appearances.
The Lakers front office has made it clear that this is Doncic’s team and they are building their roster around him. Thompson may not be the player he once was, but with Doncic’s passing ability and vision, he will be seen as more of a catch-and-shoot player for the Lakers, which would be perfect for him at this stage of his career.
In the 21 games Thompson played with Doncic, he averaged 14.9 points on 40.6% from beyond the arc. Hence, the 36-year-old will be a great fit alongside the Lakers guard.
Miami Heat have shown interest in Klay Thompson
While the Lakers are favorites to land Thompson based on recent reports, another team has been linked with him over the last few weeks – the Miami Heat. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo early in the offseason, the Heat have made it clear that they are looking to contend for a championship next year and are actively looking to add more players to their roster.
NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that the Heat are interested in acquiring Thompson.
The Miami Heat’s number 1 priority right now is to acquire shooting. They found their number 1 target. That’s Klay Thompson. The problem is Klay has 1 year left on his contract so they’re exploring whether they can trade for him, or whether this could end up in a buyout. We’ll see over the next several weeks.

The Heat are trying to surround their frontcourt duo of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo with shooters, and there are very few better than Thompson at it. It remains to be seen if the veteran shooter decides to join the Lakers or Heat this summer.
